“Excellent relaxing break”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed holiday, food was excellent and the staff were very courteous. The hotel and rooms are lovely and the grounds are very attractive. Looking forward to our next visit.
Evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss.

Having returned a few days ago from a week at this hotel we can honestly say that we agree with the numerous positive comments already made. The hotel is efficiently run and very comfortable; it is stylish without being pretentious.
In particular we liked the architecture of the buildings and the landscaping of the gardens. The Moorish theme with plants, water and mosaics is formal and elegant in places but also allows for informal and secluded areas with palms and other abundant greenery. In the more formal garden areas botanical specimens are named.
Careful thought and attention to detail is evident everywhere around the hotel. Bedroom areas are roomy and the provision of mattress toppers on request gives greater choice for those who prefer softer beds. We hired a kettle from reception for the week. Milk etc can be got at the supermarket across the road or at the Spar, nearer the port, but only in the1 litre size ( or so we found). The minibar in the room is for keeping things cool, it's not a full fridge, so the milk didn't keep quite so long and I'd have preferred the half litre size.
The hotel has an environmentally friendly policy. For example waste water is recycled for use in the gardens. There is also evidence of care for animals, while providing a practical solution to their presence in the grounds. Facilities for cats, with feeding dispensers, litter area etc, are under a stairwell. It is all kept very clean and tidy. Moreover, the cats are healthy and definitely not feral, as a previous reviewer suggested. If they sometimes appear a bit aloof, well they are just being cats!!
Our only mild criticism is about the timing of dinner. With staff working over two sittings we can understand that neither sitting can be too lengthy, but we like to linger over our meal with a bottle of wine( we don't drink much outside this time) and the wonderful variety and quality of the food available also meant we didn't want to rush. Other people clearly felt the same and one evening several of us were asked, very politely, to finish as it was10 pm (the second sitting started at 8.30). Although one and a half hours is quite reasonable in one way, it does take time going round the various food stations in the large restaurant especially if it is busy, and eating/conversation time is consequently affected.

Room Tip: Higher floors on blocks facing souh-west are sunnier.

We spent a week at the Mogan Playa from 12th March. We could not fault the hotel, staff and location. Unusually for us we stayed mainly by the pool (1) as it was so lovely. The harbour area is very pretty and there are some good reataurants. We found eating out a little expensive due to the exchange rate. Would recomment the Bruchetta Italian near the beach. The hotel surprised us with a bottle of cava left in our room on my Birthday, a lovely touch. I also enjoyed the bucks fizz available everyday at breakfast. We had a lovely room with a patio area with two sun beds on the third floor. The hotel is large but very pretty with botanical plants everywhere and it did not feel at all crowded. We were on half board and the food in the restaurant was excellent, fresh tuna cooked in front of you, steak cooked by the chef, Canarian style potatoes, masses of salads, fresh fruit, smoothies at breakfast..... The staff and managers could not have been more helpful. Live piano music, classical spanish guitar and more free cava on some evenings. The entertainment (not something that we usually go to was very good, magicians, dancers and tribute bands (some a little dodgy!). The activities programme is very good and I joined yoga on every other day. Many of the activities are free. We would definitely recommend the hotel and would return.

We returned this year to the above mentioned Hotel. As usual we had a very pleasant stay. We ask for a special room because we have been in an accident and need a room that is easy to get to and not far from the Reception. We got what we wanted and needed.

It was our 4th stay at this lovely Hotel and we are coming back again.
Good service from friendly people.

Room Tip: We phoned ahead and asked for advice to get the room we wanted.

Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa, Gran Canaria.

(Reviewed by English Mick)

Date of visit: 12 March – to 19 March 2012.

My wife and I have just returned from a week’s stay in Gran Canaria at the Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa. Prior to booking we researched the island’s hotels with thoroughness and care using various holiday company brochures, and various web travel review sites for advice - especially Trip Advisor.
It’s always important to read as many reviews as possible to get a properly balanced view of a hotel. Done thoroughly, then it’s relatively easy to work out a fair and reasonable average assessment. In the case of the Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa it didn’t take very long to conclude this was going to be the kind of hotel where we could confidently relax and enjoy ourselves.
Look up ‘cordial’ in an English dictionary and you’ll find it means: ‘warm and friendly’. In the case of this particular hotel the meaning could not have greater validity, for ‘warmth and friendliness’ is exactly what we encountered from every member of staff, beginning on day one and continuing all the way through to the end of day seven. Their enthusiasm and dedication to their guests shines through their every task, and the staff are a credit to the hotel.
Best of all is the fact that there is nothing forced or artificial about the friendliness and warmth shown by the staff, for hospitality just seems to be a natural, unforced attribute in these parts. Of course, if your natural tendency is to be grumpy, rude and ultra-critical – as in the case of a German couple who were at an adjacent table to ours in the restaurant each evening – and who seemed to want to find fault with everything, then you are likely to leave as miserable and unhappy as when you first arrived. (Doubtless these particular visitors’ Trip Advisor review will reflect their sour and grumpy natures – though I feel obliged to say that most of the German guests at the hotel seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, and were polite and friendly).
It was a delight to find that although this is a very large complex with a great number of guests we never felt crowded or pressured for space, for there always seemed to be somewhere quiet and secluded for us to relax. The design of the hotel is a delight with the central area of the main building being a wonderful atrium filled with a rich diversity of trees and plants set against tumbling waterfalls and streams. The hotel’s artwork too is a joy with some stunning tile-art and lively, imaginative paintings throughout. (see photos), and the hotel gardens are an absolute delight.
The facilities are extremely good with two swimming pools (including childrens’ pool area), a library, games rooms, spa, giant chess board, etc., etc. We ate all our meals in the main buffet restaurant and found the food to be of a very high quality and standard. The multiplicity of choice is such that we always seemed to find new culinary treats to enjoy whether at breakfast or evening meal. My wife loved the salads, cold meats and cheese selection. I especially enjoyed the lovely varieties of fish, freshly cooked to order for dinner. There is an a-la-carte restaurant which enjoys a fine reputation but as we didn’t have a special occasion to celebrate, we gave it a miss, but on our next visit we will very probably give it a try.
The walk from the hotel to the picturesque and friendly port of Mogan is a short stroll of some ten minutes along a lovely tiled avenue (see pic). You’ll find a wide variety of bars and restaurants both fronting the beach area (which is man-made, beautifully clean and well-maintained) and around the harbour area, and if you are a seafood afficionado you will undoubtedly be spoilt for choice. There is an excellent local water ferry service run from the quayside near the main harbour building. The cost for the boat rides is very reasonable and it makes for a pleasant outing – though I feel obliged to say we visited Puerto Rica along the coast and then rather wished we hadn’t bothered. There’s a magnificent beach there – should you be a dedicated sunworshipper -but the town has distinct similarities with Blackpool – in that ‘cheap and tawdry’ is what predominates there.
Next year we plan to return to the hotel Cordial Mogan Playa. It was a pleasure to stay there and, really the only things we could find fault with was that the beds were a little hard (soon rectified with soft mattress toppers when requested) and the cost of renting the room safe (18.20 euros) is a bit on the steep side. However, these are just two minor points among a multitude of majors, and are mentioned because I’m trying hard (with difficulty) to find some criticisms to balance this review.
We travelled with First Choice from Manchester and our flights were on time on the outwards and return journeys. The bus journey from Gran Canaria airport to Mogan Playa was about an hour on the inward trip but considerably longer on the return when the bus called at about eight other stops, but we were in such a relaxed mood after a week’s stay, that really didn’t bother us.
