“Too windy?”

Well, we walked from the village to the cable car station - not a long walk but it was a hot day - and asked for two tickets. The attendant shrugged and pointed to a notice warning us that we might not get back down again because of strong winds. It was not windy at that time but I could see that it might be at the top. I tried to ask about this as my partner has some mobility issues and would struggle to walk back down from Pigra but the attendant just shrugged again and turned away. Service was non existant! In the end, we decided not to risk it and walked away. It was a bit galling, as we had lunch in the village to see the cable cars going up and down quite happily, obviously untroubled by wind, until we left Argegno by ferry two hours later. I'm sure the views are wonderful but we didn't get to find out!

Whilst visiting Argegno I took a photo of the area around the lake and noticed the orange cabin. On closer inspection we saw that it was a cable car / funicular and decided to take a closer look. There were maps showing us where the funicular would take us and routes that we could walk to get good viewpoints once we were at the top. We purchased tickets - only €4-50 return per person - quite a bargain by U.K. standards! On the way up we started to appreciate the views we were going to get. But when we were at the top - wow, the view was fantastic. We followed the Belvedere route that took about 20 minutes The path was good but I suggest that ladies wear flat soles - no heels or platforms! Sometimes we had to be aware of groups of young cyclists on route who were testing their ability to go 'off road'. (School holiday clubs)
At the end of the route the whole of Lake Como lay before us - the views were spectacular and there were places to sit to take in the views. A very worthwhile trip that we hadn't seen advertised anywhere. We were so pleased that we saw the small orange cabin on the photo we took. Highly recommended.

Sum total of this visit was a distinct lack of any interest in making this an enjoyable experience for their visitors. The toilets were out of order at the bottom of the cable car and we were told by the rather surly attendant that the toilets at the top were available. These however, consisted of a dirty loo with half a broken seat and again, another unhelpful car operator. I asked him to tell his boss, as he said it “wasn’t up to him” to fix it. My husband heard him telling someone on the phone later, whether it was his boss or not, I certainly won’t be returning to find out!

On reaching the top we were greeted by the 'only English speaking
Italian' in the village. He was located at the first cafe and he couldn't do enough to assist us. We had a toasted cheese and ham sandwhich and a coffee. He even offered to light up the barbie for us. A very pleasant experience. The walk around Pigra is fascination and the walk to Belvedere is great with fantastic views over Lake Como. A must visit.

4.50 Euros return per person. C10 bus stop at bottom. Holds 12 people per car and runs every half an hour. However runs more frequently if more people. Tiny picturesque village which makes an effort to be a tourist attraction but is not. Several walks from top.
