An extremely well equipped cottage in a fab location to explore some of Ireland's best kept secrets! Eileen and Robert are brilliant hosts who have unbridled knowledge of the area (they owned the local shop for 30 something years!) and go above and beyond to welcome you to their property. Would stay here again in a heartbeat, huge thanks again to a wonderful couple! Book now, you won't be disappointed!
Jim and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Kerry in Eileen and Roberts beautiful cottage on the picturesque Beara peninsula.
The cottage has all the facilities to make your stay warm, clean, comfortable and very enjoyable. We had peace and quiet, stunning views and more food than we should have eaten ( sure what a holidays for ? )
Every walk and drive we took around Cork and Kerry was breathtaking. I will never forget my stay here in Ellies cottage. It was heaven. Thank you again Eileen and Robert for all your kindness
Ellie's Cottage at the Beara Peninsula was the high point of our ten day stay in Ireland. Eileen and Robert (owners) were awaiting us and had a fire going in the lovely fireplace, along with a hot pot of tea and a basket with biscuits and chips ready for our use. Our arrival was hugely delayed because of a navigational error on my part and we didn't arrive until 10 pm. Granted, it was still light out, being in Ireland, but the fact that Eileen and Robert awaited us was indicative of the kind of kind people they are!
Ellie's cottage is just off the road as nearly all of the residences we witnessed during our stay. One can walk to a coffee shop, Pedals and Boots (where they have a variety of GF items for those of us who must be GF, as well as lovely hand crafted items for sale), but be sure to bring a reflective vest, as is the norm for the folks who live there and walk along the roads. One can also drive to Josie's for dinner. Josie's is a short distance; however, American drivers be warned: the drive is spectacularly beautiful but you will likely never be able to achieve the speed limit as the Irish do. They are clearly used to driving on the left in mountainous country!! One can also walk to the church where you will find a path that goes through a forest that is nothing short of magical until it clears so that you come to the views of the mountain peaks and the Atlantic ocean.
The cottage itself is warm, inviting and comfortable. It has all the conveniences of home. The new bathroom Robert installed is just beautiful. The kitchen has all modern features AND a lovely little fireplace for the coziest old world feeling. The living room has an additional wood burning stove and a spectacular view of the mountains. The gardens surrounding the house are cozy and charming, as well.
The best part are Robert and Eileen themselves. Their love of their countryside is contagious and as a result, we had the BEST adventure on Bere Island. You'll definitely want to enjoy Castletownbere where you'll catch a ferry to Bere Island. It is a real working port with fishing vessels and a lovely bustling town. Stop at the visitors center on Bere Island. A tall, lean young man with startlingly blue eyes will direct you to the walking path to see the lighthouse. Be sure to look at the photography at the visitors center-it's his work. Put on your hiking shoes, bring some water, and get ready for a true adventure scaling the mountains to see the staggering and indescribably beautiful views that await you.
Can you tell how much we loved it there? Be sure to get Robert and Eileen to share the history of the house with you. We have nothing like it in America. My husband and I feel like we found two friends in Eileen and Robert-their warmth, hospitality and lovely cottage were the best part of our stay in Ireland. We plan to return.
Eileen and Robert made us feel very welcome as soon as we arrived with a nice fire and a pot of tea. They are both really lovely people. The cottage was a comfortable base to explore the Ring of Beara and take some lovely walks.
