Our first look at the richly done up lobby with antiques and lush furniture made us go wow, but the feeling was rather short lived. We had booked this place via an agent, like the other two hotels in West Sikkim and Darjeeling for our trip. But these guys had no record of our names and demanded to see vouchers (which the others did not even ask for) - Mr. Basudev at the reception could have been a little more cordial and helpful, instead of making us feel like unwelcome guests. He randomly told us to take one room, which when we took a look it was highly cramped, no space for the extra bed which we had already paid for.
When I told him, it's not the kind of room we had booked, he made me trek to 205 in the other wing. While this one had extra space it was bang overlooking the parking lot - not a very exciting view, right? I came back to the reception and reported that I wasnt impressed with this. He again made me trek to 305, saying even that is free take a look. Now this hotel does not have elevators, and we are tired after a LONG drive. So why not give me the best available room already, instead of making me take a look at the not so good rooms first? This was the first negative thing we felt about the place.
The room we took (305) was in the new wing, still overlooking the parking lot but with a half view of the stadium and a mountain backdrop. Decent size, nice bathrooms, tub but cant use as it's supplied by a limited capacity geyser - anyway given the water situation in these hill stations it is better off not to use the tub and save water. So not complaining about that.
Even when I went to check the rooms, the cleaning staff ladies were squabbling loudly, a complete dampener when you are in a so called luxury premises - you don't want it to sound like a fish market. Had the same noisy experience in the dining room, both times when we were the only family there, once for lunch and the other time for breakfast - extremely noisy staff chatting very loudly. Cleaning staff carrying buckets, mops and brooms stomping around the (beautiful) dining room when we are in dining was such a terrible experience. Why mess up something good so bad?
Food at all times was very mediocre - same old Punjabi stuff that I can eat in Mumbai or Delhi or Bangalore - not a single local dish. Breakfast had French fries, super oily pav bhaji, and some other dishes that no one would like for breakfast.
Our last dinner there also had such poor dishes in the buffet. The food scene here seriously needs looking into.
Last but not the least, our iPhone charger went missing from the room post room cleaning, which when we told the reception, they just send the old lady cleaner to walk through our room to say she had never seen it. Very helpful that was.
Pros - beautiful property with a lot of history, lovely gardens and views (if the person at the reception allows that is), good parking space for your car given that most of Gangtok has no parking spots
Cons - bad food, loud squabbling staff totally killing the heritage atmosphere, steep flights of stairs to climb (check senior citizens suitability)

Room Tip: Make sure you insist on showing you the best room right away instead of fooling around

located in an old building of colonial times, once a guest house for royal guests, the hotel has retained with effortless elegance all the trappings of an era gone bye..the furnishings and drapings and pictures and relics all of impeccable good taste..incredibly large, beautifully furnished and impeccably clean rooms with modern day toilets also done up in style.. good food and service lead to memorable days in a lovely town!

Room Tip: facing the hills in the main block..

An excellent place to stay in the centre of Gangtok. The rooms are spacious and neat. The views from the rooms are excellent. The staff are cordial and extremely helpful. The hotel has a lovely manicured lawn and garden, the stairs though are a bit steep and not so comfortable for older guests.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Paljor stadium have better view.

Elgin Nor-Khill was once the guest house of the King of Sikkim where important dignitaries were often put up. A stay in this hotel, run by the Elgin Group, who specialise in heritage hotels in the Himalayas, evokes memories of a bygone era accentuated by period furniture, sepia tinted photographs of the royal family as well as early 20th century pics of day-to-day lives of Nepalis, Bhutias, Lepchas and Tibetan tribes who were common to these parts in that era. The hotel even has a mini grand piano, albeit, presently non-functional. The bell boys and the stewards in the restaurant are attired in full liveried traditional costumes and are courteous to a fault. The entire hotel staff is geared to making your stay as comfortable as possible. The grounds are immaculately manicured and the hotel overlooks the beautiful Himalayan peaks including Kanchenjunga - the third highest mountain peak in the world and the highest in India. On clear days you can expect to see the peak from your hotel room. The hotel even has a spa but during our stay the masseurs were not available. The in-house restaurant- Shangri La is geared to cater to the Indian as well as the continental palate. The hotel also has a cosy bar stocked with a small selection of beers, scotch, blended whiskies, liqueurs, etc. I took a particular fancy to the cherry brandy brewed locally in Sikkim and offered as a welcome drink. The very English ritual of Evening Tea is something Elgin specialises in and is strongly recommended. The hotel offers a wide selection of world famous Darjeeling and Assam teas and serves tea cakes and cookies baked in- house to go with them. The hotel is also home to two dogs - Lisa and Hilton of Russian Samoyed breed who are a hit with the kids. I strongly recommend this place for Relaxation and Recuperation (R & R) to recharge your batteries. If you heed my advice you will do well to give long day trips to Nathula and the full day tour of Gangtok a miss and just stay put in Elgin Nor-Khill for a well deserved rest from hectic city living.
