Costa Calma is a very beautiful resort. The Apartment we stayed in was in the El Granillo area. It was literally a 5 minute walk to the beach. The water, even though it’s the Atlantic was very warm and clean and you could see fish swim around you.
Costa Calma doesn’t have a central town area. There are several shopping areas strewn around the place that have bars and restaurants in them. It is the German area of Fuerteventura so the food is of a Spanish or Germanic persuasion and in all cases I experienced is exceptionally good.
We hired a car for four days at a very reasonable €30 (£25) per day. We traveled just over 700Km (435 Miles) and covered most of the island. The roads on the whole are very well built and snake their way up through the mountains yielding some amazing views from the tops looking down to the coast. We traveled up to the North of the island to the British area, Corralejo. We were very impressed with the Dunes of soft yellow sand before you enter the town on the FV1. We had a delicious meal of fresh Sardines at a Spanish restaurant by the port where we first stopped. Then we found the Main Street. There were a lot of tourist shops that weren't overpriced but there were also (in my opinion) too many British bars and restaurants. I eat English food at home. When abroad I prefer to try the local cuisine.
We drove down South through the tourist resort of Morro Jable to go and see the most southerly point of the island to visit the lighthouse at Punta Jandia. Just past Morro Jable the excellent roads I mentioned earlier ran out leaving us driving on gravel tracks. On the way back from the lighthouse we saw a sign to a restaurant at Cofete. We were still on the dirt tracks and after 8Km (5 Miles) we came across a small building powered by a generator running in an adjacent “garage”. Here I had an extremely good Goat Stew.
In summary, Fuerteventura is a very beautiful island. The locals are friendly, the food is very good and the weather in October is a damn site warmer than England. The only negatives I could see in Costa Calma is there is a lot of litter laying around in the unbuilt areas and there is some unsightly graffiti in public areas. Apart from that I couldn't recommend the island highly enough for a holiday.
