Cavendish offered us a warm welcome in a traditional style country hotel. We stayed overnight and found all staff to be very friendly. The hotel had a cosy and relaxed feel whilst offering excellent service as you’d expect in an expensive hotel. The hotel is situated in the Chatsworth estate so is great for those visiting or walking. The food was lovely. Perfect for a nice weekend away.

This was booked as a birthday getaway for my partner.
We arrived early and were really impressed with the alterations made during this pandemic, hand sanitiser stations at convenient points, all staff wearing visors and the reception behind a screen with plenty of wipes being used on the room keys and the credit card machine.
Arriving early we had a drink in the bar; not being able to go to the bar and see what was on offer would have been an issue but the waiter had an encyclopaedic knowledge on the available drinks (he was working both days we were there and was a very nice chap).
We had afternoon tea which left us full but not uncomfortably so. We checked in and were pleasantly surprised at being upgraded to a suite. An absolutely gorgeous room and I could not get enough of the view from the window (I took far too many photos of it). Flowers in the room were from the Chatsworth estate and so were the chocolates.
A quick unpack, snooze and freshen up and back down for dinner. Every one of the 4 courses was delicious and brought out in good time. Nice selection of wines to choose from too.
I enjoyed a good nights sleep and woke to that glorious view and blue skies.
Down for a hearty breakfast and feeling refreshed and relaxed took the path from the hotel to Chatsworth estate.
Loved every minute of the stay, it’s a shame it went too quickly.

The place that keeps getting better!
Visited the Cavendish for afternoon tea as a belated birthday treat due to a few ‘hiccups’ in the month of March!! All in all service Outstanding,,,, food Outstanding!!
was greeted by front of house who seated us, offered drinks and brought out the most wonderful exquisite afternoon tea ensemble. Perfect combination of sweet/savoury and each item more delicious than the last, the icing on the cake was the lovely plate (see picture),,it really is the smaller finishing touches which make a venue!
look no further than the Cavendish, it really is a real treat and you’ll be made to feel like Royalty in the heart of Derbyshire! 10/10

We stayed at the Cavendish last weekend for our wedding anniversary. Every anniversary before this we stayed at Hassop Hall but they closed last year. Still The Cavendish should be as good. Or so we imagined.
The room was very good, overlooking the Chatsworth Estate. We arrived late afternoon and after a rest in the room we made our way to the bar for a celebratory drink or two. We were informed that the bar was ‘ off limit’ due to COVID 19 and waited at a table for the waiter service. Waited, waited and waited, there were about 8 couples in the bar and outside seating area and with at least four waiters to serve less than 20 people there should have been very little waiting. It seems that the waiters cannot multi-task as whilst we were waiting to be served the couple on the next table asked one of the staff if they could have a menu. They were told that they would get one soon. We were shocked, if either my wife or I were waiting on the reply would have been “Yes sir, I’ll get on straight away”. We eventually were served after waiting 20 minutes.
We drank our drinks and went down the road to The Wheatsheaf pub where we had a fabulous meal and a full night of celebration. The Wheatsheaf do accommodation as well as good food and splendid beers. Next year we may go there.
The food at breakfast was very good but again the waiter and waitress kept us waiting for drinks and food. When the waitress eventually came tour table we asked for coffee for two and two full Cavendish breakfasts. She said she was only taking the drinks order and would return later. Cannot multi-tasking staff be found in Baslow?
The most annoying part of the stay was when we received the bill, we didn’t mind paying for the room or the previous night’s drinks or even £19+ each for breakfast. What really annoyed us was the comment at the bottom of the bill. 5% service charge will be automatically added to the bill and distributed to the staff. Normally, when we go out, we tip waiters, but only if they deserve it which is 95% of the time. Very rarely do we not tip, but to be forced to tip for bad service goes against our principles.
Does the Duke of Cavendish ever come to his hotel? If he did, would he have to wait 20 minutes for a drink and wait for his meal. I think not.
Now to come to the title of my review. If we had read the previous reviews, some of which, especially the 1 star ones, we wouldn’t have booked in at the hotel so we are totally to blame and because of the experience we will not be returning. Ever.

I’m always nervous about hotels with lovely
Food and expensive rooms as they can go one of two ways. There either quiet and stuffy or like the Cavendish they are warm and welcoming.

Whilst the hotel is traditional and comfortable as opposed to modern and stylish what makes your trip here is the attention to detail made by all the team.

From reception to our regular almost host Gerry our trip was welcoming friendly and considerate. They keep an eye on their guests and constantly ensure that they have everything they need.

The food was excellent and not over priced and the hotel is perfectly situated to enjoy the surrounding area, you can even walk to Chatsworth house over the back fields.

Lovely relaxing weekend.
