We spent a week here because our usual Matala hotel was fully booked. The room was OK and the staff perfectly friendly, but the shower had a mind of its own, going on and off for no known reason; the fridge froze our milk; there was no kettle and no possibility of getting one. (We ended up buying a travel kettle).
We had checked beforehand that we could pay by Visa but after an huge rigmarole we were told the transaction had been declined, when I checked with my bank, no request had been submitted. We did wonder whether this, and the requirement to buy tea in reception were just to gain cash.

Room Tip: Get a room looking over Hotel Street.

This is a typical beach hotel for the smaller towns. Sophia is located right off the Main Street along a quaint thoroughfare. The staff here (Rhula) are super friendly and helpful. If your an on spending extended time on the sites of Phaitos and Gortyna this is a perfect place to stay.
Be aware that the beds are small and the mattresses are rock hard. If you can get past that then Sophia is worth the price of the stay.

Room Tip: We were in room 16. It had a wraparound balcony table and chairs.

I've stayed here for two nights. The room was very small, which means you have no space to open your suitcase. Furthermore the beds where really hard and the shower was lousy with a dripping beam without pressure. Positive is that the room was clean and staff friendly and that it's near the beach and centre of Matala.

The owners are so friendly and made us feel so comfortable! We drank together many Rakis as well.
This hotel is 1 minite far from the beach, restaurants and shops. It was really clean and the yard was amazing.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same.
