We stayed at the Wiemsel for 3 nights and had a wonderful stay. I want to split the review in hotel and restaurant because we experienced them differently.

So, the hotel:
The rooms were spacious with airconditioning and recently renovated. They were very comfortable and offered all we needed, with a terrace outside with nice chairs to sit in the sun (the benefit of going in August).
We booked massages which were nice. We do recommend you call in advance if you only have a short stay to avoid disappointment. I also had a pedicure which was nice as well.

The breakfast was a buffet with more than enough variety in foods. The staff was helpful in setting a table for us outside when requested.

On our last day we enjoyed the outside pool and sunbeds. We also used the steambath and sauna. We did not get around to the inside pool but all looked very clean and inviting. Plenty of towels were available. Front desk was helpful. All in all a wonderful stay!

So, to get back to our dinner... (Which actually makes me not choose 5 stars in my review). We were first placed by the pianist. While we enjoy music he played so loud that we requested another table quickly. If they had told us he would be finished 5 minutes later we would have been ok with it and it would have saved the trouble. We had to ask for some complimentary bread when the starter arrived. We tried to get attention several times but staff seemed more preoccupied with each other and preparing the restaurant for breakfast than the last guests still in the restaurant (mind you that eas not only us!). When we asked for a cheese plateau the waiter didn't think of explaining what was on it, until we asked a bit later. I have a few more details like this. On itself not such a big deal but if the small things add up on just one night it is reason for us to eat somewhere else (which we did the remainder of the nights). With such a great hotel I think the staff in the restaurant should be just a bit of higher standards as well.

Our first stay at Parkhotel De Wiemsel dates back to 2008 and we kept going there because the little city of Ootmarsum is pleasant and the area is unspoiled for bicycle tourists. Moreover De Wiemsel had a Michelin star restaurant "De Wanne". It was with sorrow that we learned the hotel had gone into receivership.
Recently we read that the place had been taken over by a German entrepreneur. Apparently the complete hotel had been upgraded to modern standards and we were eager and anxious to return to a cherished place. Our first impression was that the large garden was so well kept. The interior of the hotel was indeed due for renovation and the new owner has invested generously in creating a complete new interior while keeping some old assets as the indoor and outdoor pools.
The restaurant has lost it's Michelin star but offers nice food. In former reviews I had read that the wine list was limited and indeed there is a lack of French and a predominance of German wines. The breakfast, served in a patio overlooking the garden is second to none and the complete staff is remarkably helpful and friendly. As wine lovers we had a very good contact with the sommelier who knows his business and the shortcomings on the wine list.
With a little improvement in the variety on the menu De Wiemsel must regain it's fame. We saw a lot of people there who were -like we-curious to see how the new Wiemsel had evolved.
The hotel has a reputed beauty center but this is of no appeal to us. The many cars on the outside of this center is the proof of it's popularity.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have a private terrace

Dear hendrik_vankets,

thank you for being such a thoughtful guest of our Parkhotel de Wiemsel Ootmarsum and visiting us again after our complete makeover. We highly value your comments here on Tripadvisor and the time you took for these. You can rest assured that we will discuss every detail with staff and management, to make sure we not only listen to you, but also take action where appropriate and possible. When it comes to our Restaurant de Wanne, we would like to have a star back, but certainly not at any price. We must, after all the past, make sure, we have our profitability in sight. Of course not at the cost of quality and staff, but by making sure our offer of food and beverage, is what our guests want.
We are glad that you have seen the improvements in the hotel as well as the breakfast. And we are working hard of finetuning all other areas of our Parkhotel de Wiemsel.
We certainly do hope, you visit us again very soon and your continous support and input is more than welcome again.
For your next stay, we highly recommend you to visit our own Parkhotel de Wiemsel Ootmarsum website, to ensure you get the best deals and availability. And if you are a Facebook fan, you might also become ours, so that you never miss any upcoming news and offers.

We are looking forward welcoming you at the Parkhotel de Wiemsel

A weekend in the Far East of NL close to Germany. A very pleasant and caring stay at De Wiemsel. Recently the new owner - a German businessman - invested in the refurbishing. Nice rooms and suites with a view on wide park and grasslands.
The hotel has extensive facilities from good sized swimming pool to wellness quarters to bar and library.

Dear GerardOtten-FB,

We are very pleased to read this very nice headline and your experience with your recent stay at our new Parkhotel de Wiemsel Ootmarsum, here on Tripadvisor. Nice that you had obviously a nice time at our upgraded and revived hotel.Of course there are still improvements to make here and there. We certainly do hope that this will not be your last stay with us, so that we can demonstrate you that all the investments our new owner has made, do show. You did not mention if you have tried our restaurant De Wanne. Also in this area we have made great efforts to become one of the best gastronomy options in the Twente region.
Please visit our new Parkhotel de Wiemsel website to have a full virtual tour of the hotel and its facilities, as well as the various wellness and other deals we have on offer.
We are anxiously looking forward to your next stay with us, and please let us know your opinion again which we highly value.

My wife and I stayed at the De Wiesel many times before it was colosed down and became the new Parkhotel de Wiemsel after a complete renovation. Before we liked the cozy atmosphere, the large indoor pool and the location in Ootmarsum with its many galleries, boutiques and cafés. We did not like the rooms and the decoration which seemed outdated and in urgent need of a general overhaul.

Now the new look and the feel of the hotel exceeded our expectations. With its two fireplaces in the restaurant, the bar and the library felt even more cozy than before. A new large terrace overlooking the outdoor pool and a brandnew beautifully landscaped park gave this unique resort hotel a new dimension. The air conditioned rooms with separate bathrooms and toilets are state of the art, as well as the Spa and Fitness departments.

The food is excellent. But after 4 days of 3-course meals we were ready for a simple Hamburger which we found on the lunch menue. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. However, the service in the restaurant could be a bit faster.

Overall, a great place to relax for a few days!

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor all have terraces. Rooms on the south side of the first floor have great views of the park.

It's been a lot of years since we went there, 1997, I believe, but this hotel has been the subject of our stories so many times I can't count. We went with one other couple; we arrived in a rental car and when we pulled up in front, a gentleman came out in a spiffy uniform and said "Good afternoon, Mr. Williams, good afternoon, Mr. Chamberlain. We had no idea how they knew our names before we said a word, but within the first half-hour of our arrival, every one of the staff we encountered in the hotel were calling us by name. The hotel itself was a delightful small hotel with a beautiful garden, a very nice bar area and a fabulous restaurant. This town is very close to the German border and it was an excellent place from which to go on bicycle rides.

Room Tip: My date of travel is not accurate - the trip was many years ago.
