“Nice accomodation and service, food ok”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

We booked flights and transfers ourselves. Trip was 30 minutes and cost €42 but worth it for hastle free transfer.

Room: After checking in, we discovered our room only had a bath with a shower hose laying on the taps so we asked to be moved. This was done without too much fuss to an identical room but with a very nice walk-in shower. Rooms are good with seperate living area but cleaning was sporadic. (I noticed I'd dropped a cotton bud on the bathroom floor when we got back from the pool for lunch so left it there out of curiosity, it was still there 4 days later!)

Food: Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice and omlete's cooked to order. Lunch.. usual selection of salads, pasta and fruit which became a bit repetative. Dinner... very much like lunch in the main restaurant so we ate 4 times in the Italian which was the best place to eat by far. Avoid the Oriental at all costs, it was awfull!

Pools: Very crowded by the main bar and restaurant, wall to wall towels on beds and no privicy. We went to the pool at the far end of the complex each day which was much quieter.

Drinks: Decent service but don't expect anything but cheap wines. Cocktails were OK as was the beer. (why must people insist on guzzling copious amounts of alcohol during the day just because it's free???)

Area: Beach was poor locally but the Wed/Sat market was very good with some very nice stalls and a pleasant 15 minute walk along the sea front.

Staff: Generally friendly and efficient (exception being the room maid who didn't sweep the floor)

Our last two holidays were both at 4* resorts and both were miles better (but more expensive). Just come clean and drop a star, then peoples expectation may be lowered.

Room Tip: Ask at check-in if your room has a seperate (walk-in) shower if that's your preferance.

We have had several holidays in Playa Blanca. This was the first time that we used a Private Taxi Transfer from the airport to the Gran Castillo. It was so relaxing having spent four hours on a plane. It only took 25 minutes. Better than the Bus Transfer. On arrival were offered a glass of champagne or fruit juice which was a nice touch, and the reception staff were very helpful, friendly and polite. Jesus the porter then took us to our room, a Twin Superior with a sea-view. The room was very spacious, clean and very comfortable. We used two of the three restaurants, the Italian and Main Restaurant. Both offered great food, and there was plenty of variation , especially in the main, with all dietry requirements availble. All meats are cooked to order. The pool areas are clean, and the sun beds plentiful. The pool snack bar and the sports bar adjacent to the reception were busy, but there were no big queues, like you get in other All Inclusive Hotels. All staff were helpful, friendly and polite, and went that extra mile to make the holiday relaxing and enjoyable. Well done Gran Castillo. We would recommend this for couples, and will be returning in the near future.

My husband and I have just returned from a week at this hotel and it was excellent. We were welcomed with a cold drink, our cases taken to our room which was lovely. We had a superior room which had a bed settee with a really big bathroom and a great big balcony looking out over the hotel grounds to the sea. The accommodation for families was in a separate are so they had there own pools or they could come in the main pool by the sea. The Italian and Chinese restaurants were excellent and a change from the main restaurant. There was everything you could want to eat, mostly freshly cooked for you. It was nice to be able to sit outdoors for breakfast and lunch. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and all in all we could not fault it. If I was to make a criticism it would be that there was no long drops in the wardrobe area for long dresses but that is nothing really. We will recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Our room was 3276 and was very central but quiet with a sunny balcony and was facing the sea. The s...

Nice hotel, friendly staff and a glass of champagne on arrival. A long transfer (3 hrs from start to finish with Urbis) as the Hotel appears to be the last drop off point.

Lovely spacious room, always cleaned to a high standard.

The restaurant sitting scheme was dissapointing, it took 4 days of queing to be given an allocated table (we were only there 7 days)! I prefer to walk into dinner at my choosen time rather than be governed by sittings as your whole evening seems to revolve around this time.

It was surprising and spoilt the holiday somewhat that there was absolutely nowhere to have a quiet cup of coffee on the upstairs terrace. It was OK if you wanted to go downstairs to the pool bar and bring a small polystyrene cup back with you but that took the edge off the enjoyment. The bar opened at 5pm for drinks and proper cups of coffee but in my view that is not good enough. What ever happened to afternoon tea........

The entertainment was limited as it only went on for a short while. Dancing or music after 10:30 would have been nice.

The location was a little out of the way as it was a good 50 mins walk into Playa Blanca but there was a pleasant paved prom which made it easier. Bike hire was 10 euros a day from a shop adjacent to the Hotel which is highly recommended as you could cycle quite easily to the Marina and along the coast line.

All in all a good holiday.

Room Tip: We asked for a room on a high floor but was put on the ground floor overlooking the pool. Could jus...

I have just returned from this amazing hotel and can honestly say it is the best hotel i have ever stayed in. Nothing was too much for the staff to help make your stay as pleasent as possible. It looks exactlay as on the website. The food was lovely with a great varity to choose from. While i was there it was my birthday and the hotel provided a bottle of cava in the room and a cake while we was in the italian resturant. There was more than enough sunbeds for all guests and easy access to a bar at most pools. I can not wait to return!!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Like a grand castle which majestically dominates the seascape of the AtlanticOcean and its islands, the magnificent GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO is erected in the charming area of Playa Blanca, in the south of the volcanic isle par excellence: Lanzarote. With the conviction that elegance and comfort should come naturally, this Hotel is a tribute to 16th century Canary history and colonial architecture, inspired by the "Castle of San José" and the typical landscape of the island, blending in with the environment. The building is divided into different zones which maintain their colonial style, where the white facades and volcanic stone contrast with the backdrop of the deep blue ocean. A charming interior courtyard of Arab inspiration bathes the reception area with light, and the contemporary décor and pale colours create a warm and very elegant atmosphere. GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO pampers every detail of the rooms and suites, which have breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding scenery. They are decorated in a contemporary style, with marine touches, light-coloured wood and pale colours, creating a pleasant atmosphere full of light. The discerning selection of restaurants and cuisines serve Canary, national and international specialities. There are conference rooms featuring spearhead technology, and various outdoor zones for events of different kinds. The "Vitanova SPA" thalassotherapy centre provides the benefits of thermal seawater, and specific treatments for the body and soul. The Hotel features a wide range of facilities and services. ... more   less
