Our family was so happy to have chosen this home for our stay in Tuscany. It was exactly what we were hoping for: comfortable, lovely, and full of character, well-located deep in the Chianti wine region. The home has all the character you could hope for, from the fantastic cooking hearth that stretches across the dining room, to the worn stone steps that lead upstairs to the bedrooms, to the lovely antique furnishings. The patio under the arches provided us with a perfect place to sip a cup of coffee and relax after a busy day. And the bathroom had recently been completely renovated with all new fixtures.
Tommaso and his mother Ernestina were wonderful hosts, and spoke excellent English. Ernestina welcomed us with a lovely cake that she had made, which we appreciated so much after our drive up from Rome. And Tommaso left us with a fridge full of wonderful vegetables he had just picked from his garden. They shared a local map with us, which helped us navigate the area roads and find the other amazing medieval towns that dot this region.
On Tommaso’s recommendation, on our drive up from Rome we stopped for lunch in the gorgeous clifftop town of Orvieto, and that broke up the trip nicely. When we arrived, Tommaso and Ernestina met us at the nearby town of Quattro Strade to lead us in, otherwise we might not have realized that the road up to this quaint village was actually a road. It was a narrow, ancient lane tucked between olive groves, which led to a tiny village perched on a hillside. The centerpiece of the village is a 3-story, stone convent from the 15th century, and the back of the convent has been converted into this lovely home.
Florence was an easy day trip from the house, as were Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano. We enjoyed a splendid al fresco dinner at Ristoro L’Antica Scuderia, in the beautiful nearby village of Badia a Passignano, which included a bottle of chianti grown in the very vineyards that surrounded us.
I highly recommend this charming home, and its gracious hosts, to anyone who is hoping to experience the beauty and history of the Tuscan countryside.
