We were recommended this masseria by Livio Colapinto of "Zest of Italy," who leads Slow Food tours in Puglia and throughout Italy. Before we were to meet him for our tour, which began in Trani, we wanted to explore the Salento Peninsula. So, we asked him to suggest a place that would be a good base, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming at various beaches up and down the coast. It was a great choice. The warm and welcoming staff, lovely setting and spacious/quiet accommodation was just the tonic we needed after 30 hours of jet lag and a 3-hour drive from the Bari airport (getting lost along the way).

We adored this masseria, which has an understated, contemporary elegance and serene locale. The white/beige color scheme and the natural materials used throughout the decor were calming and lovely. We also discovered that the masseria was refurbished with eco-friendly materials, and with plenty of attention to environmental sustainability.

We enjoyed the little patio off our room, which looked out over the vineyards and was nestled among beautiful prickly-pear cacti in full fruit, fig trees and bay laurels. As nature and wildlife lovers, we were thrilled to see storks and cranes in flight nearby, and all the little skinks that skittered around the property, as well as the snails that came out nightly to dine on the vegetation.

A path to the beach was just a few minutes' walk away, and another beautiful beach was nearby, as well. A small citrus grove and large swimming pool were other attractive features on the property. We also reveled in an hour's tranquility in the beautiful sauna and spa, located near the reception area.

If all those amenities were not enough, the masseria also has delicious and beautifully presented food. We ate a wonderful three-course dinner the first night on the restaurant's patio, under a canopy of a thousand brilliant stars, and accompanied by the lulling sounds of crickets in the nearby trees.

Every morning a gorgeous array of local-food specialties awaited us at the breakfast buffet. We filled our plates with a selection of the freshest ricotta, heavenly burrata and mozzarella cheeses and local salumi (prosciutto, capocollo and other cured meats). Of course, we had to leave room for small portions of the gorgeous assortment of fruit-and-nut-filled tortes and pastries. I think eggs were available and prepared to your liking, if you wanted them. The groaning board also included bowls of fresh prickly pears, grapes and other fruits. Pitchers of fruit juices and coffee prepared to your liking were there to refresh and wake you up. The friendly and attentive breakfast staff was only too happy to accommodate your every coffee wish. We had espresso singles, doubles, cappuccino and a special regional drink that Ivan, our most gracious host, insisted I would love. And I did. It's called Caffè alla Salentina—a shot of espresso served over ice sweetened with homemade almond syrup. I had several during our stay. Deliciously refreshing on a hot day!

Ivan also was happy to print out maps for our journeys to other restaurants and destinations nearby. I can't say enough good things about Masseria Mongio dell'Elefante. First-rate accommodations and top-notch staff who make you feel so cared for and welcomed. I would return at every opportunity!

We spent 2 days there. Really a nice place that I would highly recommend.
The staff is always ready to help. Food excellent.
Very quiet place but close to a great beach (5 minutes walk), Otranto...and many other little paradises to discover.

We absolutely loved this place, felt like a 5-star hotel yet with a more intimate atmosphere. The service is superb, anchored by Evan and Tony. The rooms are modern, well equipped, very nice bathrooms (not a fan of the big bowl sinks). While the shower is small the layout of the suite is more is nice with an entry room, couch/daybed, kitchenette and counter. The stone walsl and beamed ceilings add to the ambiance. The stone can create a dank scent if the room has not been open for awhile but that passes quickly once the door is opened. That's what you get with stone walls but I would take that over all-drywall. Again, it create a very nice appearance.

In addition to a large poo where you can order drinksl, you can walk about 10 minutes to a great beach or they can arrange for you to go to another beach (short drive to that one) but we really enjoyed the beach in front of their property. You can rent lounge chairs at either beach but they cannot reserve them beforehand at the closer beach (seems not a problem, there were plenty when we were there on an 80 degree day in Sept). I just liked the ability to have both a pool or beach at one property. Parking is free and right there to allow you to self-park. The drive to Otranto is about 8 minutes and it seemed best to park at the large parking area as you enter the town, you can't miss it. It's about a 5 minute walk into the old harbor area from that parking lot (paid lot) where there are restaurants, shops and much to see and do, not the least of which, is the castle. See it, very interesting. You can also use the hotel bikes to go into town, about 20 minutes, I'm told, that's a great idea. To me, Otranto is a 1-day town, we explored the many towns around the coast. Do consider making the drive down to the tip of the boot, only about an hour and very scenic, great beaches and harbors along the way. Gallipoli is absolutely worth seeing and that's about an hour or so away on the Ionia Sea. Have lunch there or stay.

The BIG added feature of this hotel is the restaurant, problem among the best food we had in Italy, so good that we ate there each of the 3 nights we stayed. Absolutely spectacular. The hotels in Otranto did not look compelling to me so I would recommend staying Masseria Mongio and have the resort features with proximity to Otranto and southern Puglia.

Room Tip: All the rooms look comparable and are great, none seemed better equipped or located.

This is a perfect destination as beside beautiful beach with amazing water for relaxed swimming, quiet neat and secluded pool with top notch service and food.
Staff couldn’t do enough for us here and ensured our holiday was all it should be.
Had one evening meal which was pleasantly had outside in courtyard style area.
One small but, our original room had an issue but they very quickly moved us to a fabulous style apartment when they realised the problem and without argument quickly moved us.
We spent a fabulous 4 days here and look forward to returning.
Breakfast was certainly a highlight every morning.
