We drove into town late one evening looking for a place to stay and Hotel Puerto Ballesta caught our eye. From the outside, it has quite a bit of character and seems to be off the beaten path. The lobby and the pool/grounds - and even the walkway to the beach - were quaint and showed lots of promise. Unfortunately, the minute the hotel staff slipped the key into the lock and opened the room door, our disappointment started. I'm surprised that the hotel doesn't put money into updating the rooms. Everything just feels tired and there's a musty sort of smell to the room that made me dread going back there at the end of the day. The air conditioner blasts arctic air and that musty smell, the bathroom never really dries out and so it also has a stale/chlorine sort of smell, the counters in the room are warped, the bed is super uncomfortable. So I would say that the place itself is 4 star but the rooms, sadly (where you have to spend the most time besides the beach) are just not up to the same standards.

All of that said, if you do decide to stay here (or somewhere nearby) the beach is great for walking - it seems to go on endlessly, and there are some open-air restaurants just a block or so south from the front side of the hotel. They are a series of tents. I wouldn't go to the last restaurant (the furthest east) because even though the food is good, the juice selection is not what it should be for a coastal town. Try one of the first places you see or one of the restaurants in the middle.

This hotel was lovely and located right on the beach! We were able to have a night bonfire right on the beach. The food was great, it was clean, and the staff were very nice as well (there was a language barrier but they smiled a lot- haha). I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

We arrived at Puerto Ballesta at 5AM after taking the night bus. The night watch guard let us into our rooms and we essentially got a third night free. That started the trip out on a great food because to me that is great customer service. There was no one else in the rooms so it just made sense so we weren't sitting on the beach waiting for a certain time to roll around like at some places. The room included your standard ecuadorian breakfast, coffee, juice, fruits, eggs and bread. The AC worked well in our rooms until the power went out our last day. The rooms were just fine, the bathrooms were just fine... nothing was spectacular but everything was good and clean (although sandy like any beach hotel). The pool was a great feature... it was probably the nicest part! We ate one night at the hotel restaurant and we all got pasta and it tasted like SOAP. It was disgusting.

I am going to say I would recommend it but if I went back, I would look for another place to stay to get more for my money since it was not that cheap (16 per night per person).
