Beachfront, other restaurants close, decent value

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Feb 2019
The property was clean and well landscaped. The beach area is a bit small, but there are options for relaxing on the beach, swimming, taking out a jet ski, etc. Our room was spacious enough, though much of interior and furnishings were dated. Our room included a balcony overlooking the grounds with cheap, but functional furniture. There’s a nice bar area in the lobby, and another bar close to the beach and pool. A pricey waterfront restaurant is onsite, but there are several good meal options within walking distance. There is also a mini-market adjacent to the property with many of the basics, including wine, beer, munchies, etc.

We just got back from Guadeloupe and we stayed at Karibea (Salako). It is indeed a 3 star hotel, so don't expect a 5 star experience. We stayed in Salako building in a superior room, it was clean and tidy with everything you need. However, there were 2 negatives, 1st, the safe needed a special lock that you have to get from the reception, throughout our stay we asked for it for 3 times and they didn't have any left, which meant that we always carried our valuables which was really annoying. The 2nd negative is that the coffee and tea supplies at the room are rarely supplied, even when you ask the housekeeper for some coffee packs (even when you tip her) she gives you barely anything, but there's a kettle!
Beach: is great, I would say the best hotel beach in the area, pool is ok.
Service: is definitely a hit or miss, we came across a couple of really nice staff members and couple of others who were very dismissive, one of them even yelled at us! So we tried to just keep it short and not ask for many things. It is definitely not a service that is provided with pleasure!
Breakfast: was fine, but definitely there could be improvement, for example eggs could be cooked longer, not everyone likes slimy eggs! otherwise, a solid 3 stars breakfast.
Couple of tips: if you plan on going to la Datcha beach, I would tell you that it's not really worth it when you have this hotel's beach. La datcha is a beautiful "city" beach meaning that it is not nicely prepared and may be a little dirty in some parts, its waters are beautiful but not worth the trip unless you don't have any other beach to go to.
Second tip, across the street from the hotel there is a nice collection of restaurants, they are touristic and pricey but you it's easy to get a meal there.
Third tip, taxi fare during the day from the airport should cost you around 30e and at night 40e. You will need to agree with the driver before getting in.
Enjoy your trip!

A see a lot of mixed reviews for this place. But you get what you pay for. People comparing to the Hilton have too look at what they pay. At least from my searches this was the cheapest beach hotel with a pool I could find on our dates, and it did not disappoint. Nice room, nice beach, nice pool. Perfect for families. Very nice kiddypool. Good breakfast. Also found service to be good enough, although not super. Searching around on this hotel is a bit conducing as it seems to operate under many names, and all three buildings on the property have different names and are seemed as different hotels? But all three are very close together (the Salako and Prao could be seen as one building). We stayed in the Salako, and was happy with that. Did not eat dinner at the hotel, but plenty of restaurants just up the street, or in Gosier town, which is 15 min walk away.

Prao, Salako and Clipper are one and the same hotel. These are just the names of the buildings, depending on the room categories.
See you soon.

Service is not too friendly for not French speaking.
Beach towels and chairs not always easy to get.
Beach is not really private for hotel guests.
One day water pressure in the room was so low - could even get a shower.
Coffee machine is good but it is always line and not always works.

Considering we are tourists, and expect even a basic level of service, clean towels when the maid takes the dirty ones(didn't happen) we returned to our room in the late afternoon(after 3pm) after being out most of the day to no towels...they had remove the dirty ones and left us with nothing, had to wait until they decided to bring them to us to clean up. Booked this for 7 days over Christmas, booked directly on their website, and paid one nights upfront. However when we arrived they wanted to charge us for the full week, including the one night i prepaid, took about 20 minutes to figure this out. Asked for a late check out, no problem, asked OK, do you need our room keys to pre-program them, were told NO. Sure enough, the keys didn't work after 11am, we were lucky to have a maintenance guy on our floor, who let us in our rooms. Also, mentioned it was my birthday on the 25th. NOTHING, never been away for an anniversary, birthday or other occasion and not received a small token from the hotel. Just to mention, in case you think it maybe language related, i am bilingual English-French
For a vacation too many hassles. Go next door to La Creole, beautiful hotel.

Close to the airport, situated on a private beach with swimming pool. We upgraded to a sea view room and weren't disappointed. The room was spacious, clean and modern with a small private balcony, fridge, T.V., iron and board, safe. toiletries and tea and coffee provided but in our room not regularly replenished. Room maided every day but towels not always replaced. Breakfast was included in our package and was very good buffet service very good quality and choice of food both hot and cold. Staff were friendly and attentive. We ate an evening meal in the restaurant on our first night which was a reasonably priced buffet with a good selection of starters, mains and deserts. There are a selection of restaurants just outside the hotel gates all serving a variety of food at reasonable prices. The beach was as you would hope for clean, wide with enough sunbeams but not feeling crowded. Beach towels were available with a deposit but we had our own so can't comment on this service. A range of water sports were available with a small bar selling drinks and ice cream. Very close to the hotel were also car hire, an ATM, and two small mini markets. The only downside was a very strong and unpleasant smell in the corridor outside our room although this didn't bother us once inside we might have just been unlucky with this ,our daughters had a room on another floor which didn't smell. As this wasn't directly impact on our stay we didn't feel the need to complain so can't comment on any potential response, We also had 3 fire alarms during a 6 night stay one at 7 am and another at 1.30 am. If you are looking for a relaxing, beach holiday you can't go wrong.

Room tip: upgrade to sea view
