Canella Beach Stopover

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Mar 2020
We enjoyed our stay with you. The beach was wonderful and the water lovely. Our balcony gave us a great view. We were unprepared for there being no shampoo and know next time to bring some. Most hotels provide all that. The only thing I found disturbing was the number of birds hopping on the dining tables. One stole a piece of my bacon.

Loved this hotel ! Although we had asked for a superior room with ocean view the room we were given at first was a superior room but with no view at all the roof of a garage or something! Went back to reception immediately and explained this was not what we were expecting and asked for any other room with a view even if we had to pay more they found us a beautiful room with an awesome view the room was spotless and the outdoor kitchenette well equiped! It was technically a standard room but I think the only difference is the furniture is wicker instead of wood and I like wicker better! The breakfast buffet included was delicious, the grounds the beach the staff are all absolutely lovely! Special thanks to Livio at the front desk your incredible customer service ans smile thanks for making us feel like welcome guests at your hotel 😎 on a last note the dinner buffet at the hotel restaurant was the best meal we had during our stay !

Due to budget we had no choice but to chose the Canella, though the reviews were somewhat varied. We were not disappointed. We had a brillant long weekend. Our room was in fact 2 small studios each with a balcony and kitchen. The boys studio was above ours and joined indoors by staircase. Both studios looked recently renovated. The pool spotless and open until 10pm. The hotel beach is virtually private for the hotel guests as outsiders have a hard time getting to it. The water crystal clear and safe for kids, however when we were there, like many other parts of Guadeloupe at the time there were jellyfish. Not big ones. We all got stung but didn't stop us from bathing. There is a water scooter rental company on the beach too plus canoes (free for guests I believe, canoes, not water scooters). We didn't use the hotel restaurant for lunch nor dinner but preferred to walk down the road towards the casino as we’d seen several places, ended up eating fast food . Breakfast was included in our break, which was fine, however the coffee was hideous. The restaurant area is like a bird aviary, which we didn’t mind and look out for the iguanas which roam around the tables. Kids loved it. We paid for 2 nights 5 people (duplex accommodation) 300 euros. Compared to other hotels its very cheap. As we return to Guadeloupe every 2 years we’ll certainly return, especially as the music festival is be continued apparently next door to us in Le Moule :( p.s. The reception team speak English.

I visited Guadeloupe for a weekend on a business trip in Feb 2019. The staff is incredibly friendly and I felt welcomed right away. The front desk staff really when out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed.

The room was very clean and comfortable with all of the basics, internet, effective air conditioning; etc. I couldn’t find any English channels but was happy to enjoy French and didn’t spend much time in the room.

The grounds are nice, not amazing but totally fine for a mid level vacation or business trip.

Food at the restaurant was good. The buffet changes slightly each night and was tasty. Nothing blew me away but again for an affordable break, it was fine. There are some fun restaurants a 15 min walk away at a NYC pace. Great local food and a few tourist shops.

The beach was small and pretty enough. There was a lot of seaweed, might have been the season or there may have been a storm but it really was a lot that kept washing up on the edge of the shore. They had someone there most of the morning well into the afternoon cleaning it all up but it was stubborn and kept coming. In the water, the beach was a bit rocky. It felt like a storm had churned things up a bit but I’m sure will settle back soon. For the most part there were plenty of sections with smooth sand.

Water was cool and refreshing. I prefer clearer water but it was very pretty. It rained off and on but didn’t ruin my short time on the beach.

If you want a three star hotel, that’s exactly what this is, no more, no less. I prefer a bit more glamor and fuss but for my quick business trip it was perfectly fine. If I was paying for a vacation it would be worth it to me to pay a little more for something a bit fancier since I don’t travel much. I wouldn’t spend more than a long weekend there, Thurs-Sun. Longer and I’d need some more fluff. For a family trip, it’s quite appropriate though it was an older crowd.

I used to travel a lot for work, nearly forty countries. I really know hotels and accommodations and this is a real three star place. It’s a bit pricey for a three star stay if I had paid for it but if you’re looking for a three, this is it.

If you come this far and stay here, make sure you plan to visit other beaches and other parts of the island. This isn’t a great representation of the beauty of Guadeloupe.

Our family spent the last night of our vacation here because of its proximity to the airport. The staff was incredibly friendly, and they were trying so hard as the phone kept ringing and more people lined up at the desk (they have 143 rooms I think). They were clearly undermanned and overwhelmed but always kept smiling. We had to wait a long time for our room to be ready which was not hardship—the beach is gorgeous. The 5 euro charge for a chaise was annoying, but if you can score the spot out on the pier you'll never want to leave. The food at the beach bar was adequate and the dinner buffet was excellent. Rooms were dated but large and comfortable. If you're looking for a young or a family scene, this is not your place. An older crowd.

A rather expensive resort, located on a beautiful beach, with wonderful staff that just leaves you with wishing ...if only they did this, if only they did that, if only they spoke a few languages other than French although the staff did try. The accommodations we requested for a handicap accessible room was exactly what we got and it was a nice room. We arrived at 9pm at night and if only someone could have showed us to our room instead of having us bump and thump around the hotel late at night with our luggage telling us that our room was right up the hall and make a right???? Our room was not all the way out the door and it was to the left. We are 81 and we did request a handicap room....a little help at that hour would have meant a much warmer welcome....Not "You are on your own". The big flat screen tv was ALL in French. Even Cuba has CNN in English. There were no booklets to guide you....no hand outs to tell you what is going on in the hotel....everything had to be figured out. We didn't figure out our password for two days when someone sort of pantomimed that we needed the magical password. When you first are driven up to the entrance of the Canella Hotel, there is the set of stairs and a handicap ramp on both sides but guys, go for it and buy some paint. Your first impression is this place looks a little seedy. Its not but that is what greets you. The breakfast that came with our room could not have been better served by lovely staff that did try to communicate and did a fairly good job. I feel bad saying these negative things about a hotel that tries....but then I thought....its the staff that tries. The owners just need to part with a few bucks and spruce the place up. My room had a handicap shower that soaked the whole room, had chipped paint and actually could have been dangerous. Our telephone never worked in the room. Again I feel bad complaining but it was a very expensive hotel .....there were much cheaper residences nearby....and you really needed to rent a car as there was no way of getting around that we could figure out without one. We've had vacations all over the Caribbean so language has a way of sorting itself out on holiday. It should not be that big a problem. We had a grand time in Cuba last year and it was half the price. Again, I cannot say enough about the fabulous staff especially the young lady Christine at the front desk and another young man who really went the extra mile. So my complaint is this: Owners, do some much needed renovation OR charge less money. We did have a wonderful time there and as I said the staff made all the difference. The potential here is so much better than the actual occurrence. You are already ahead of the game with your staff...........Now make them proud because they try so hard to please.
