We loved this place but........................

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Mar 2019
A rather expensive resort, located on a beautiful beach, with wonderful staff that just leaves you with wishing ...if only they did this, if only they did that, if only they spoke a few languages other than French although the staff did try. The accommodations we requested for a handicap accessible room was exactly what we got and it was a nice room. We arrived at 9pm at night and if only someone could have showed us to our room instead of having us bump and thump around the hotel late at night with our luggage telling us that our room was right up the hall and make a right???? Our room was not all the way out the door and it was to the left. We are 81 and we did request a handicap room....a little help at that hour would have meant a much warmer welcome....Not "You are on your own". The big flat screen tv was ALL in French. Even Cuba has CNN in English. There were no booklets to guide you....no hand outs to tell you what is going on in the hotel....everything had to be figured out. We didn't figure out our password for two days when someone sort of pantomimed that we needed the magical password. When you first are driven up to the entrance of the Canella Hotel, there is the set of stairs and a handicap ramp on both sides but guys, go for it and buy some paint. Your first impression is this place looks a little seedy. Its not but that is what greets you. The breakfast that came with our room could not have been better served by lovely staff that did try to communicate and did a fairly good job. I feel bad saying these negative things about a hotel that tries....but then I thought....its the staff that tries. The owners just need to part with a few bucks and spruce the place up. My room had a handicap shower that soaked the whole room, had chipped paint and actually could have been dangerous. Our telephone never worked in the room. Again I feel bad complaining but it was a very expensive hotel .....there were much cheaper residences nearby....and you really needed to rent a car as there was no way of getting around that we could figure out without one. We've had vacations all over the Caribbean so language has a way of sorting itself out on holiday. It should not be that big a problem. We had a grand time in Cuba last year and it was half the price. Again, I cannot say enough about the fabulous staff especially the young lady Christine at the front desk and another young man who really went the extra mile. So my complaint is this: Owners, do some much needed renovation OR charge less money. We did have a wonderful time there and as I said the staff made all the difference. The potential here is so much better than the actual occurrence. You are already ahead of the game with your staff...........Now make them proud because they try so hard to please.

We had the pleasure of getting away from the terrible winter cold for a few days of sun and Canella was a good choice for that. With a beach at the property and an adequate restaurant on site it is a good choice for a reasonable stay.

We stayed here one night before boarding a cruize. The hotel is nice for the area, although it is a bit run down. Rooms are reasonably in good shape and clean and the beds ae confortable. There is a restaurant which serves breakfast as well as diner and drinks. We had breakfast here (was included with the room), it was a buffet type and had a reasonnable choice for a breakfast. These is a nice beach are and a nice pool. This isn't a top of the line hotel but is good for a short stay or for a family vacation.

“Mal entretenu”, “heruntergewirtschaftet”, a dump! This hotel should be a one star; almost every room, public or private needs to be updated. The prices reflect a 3 star hotel, which it isn’t. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel unless it is the only place around that has rooms available or the rooms are going for bargain prices

For one night prior to our 14-day March 2018 cruise, we stayed at Canella Beach Hotel. We arrived at Canella Beach Hotel within about 20 minutes of leaving the airport. The front desk staff greeted us warmly, and spoke English quite well, which made check-in very easy. For our family of five, our pre-cruise stay at Canella Beach Hotel, Duplex 322 and 323, was comfortable and convenient.

My mother and our two sons stayed on the lower level, which was room 322, while my husband and I stayed on the upper level, which was room 323. The rooms appeared to be modern and clean upon our arrival.

After a day of traveling, we were quite hungry when we got to the hotel. Thankfully, the on-site restaurant, La Veranda, was open for dinner. Most of the restaurant staff spoke French, but one waitress spoke English, and she is the person who attended to us at dinner time. Our waitress kindly explained the options to us, and we selected three adult meals and two children’s meals, which were all comprised of a drink and two of the three available courses – we chose appetizers and entrées. It was a buffet-style dinner, so after letting the waitress know what our selections would be, we helped ourselves to our meals. To us, dinner was just ok. The passion fruit drink that I had was delicious, as was the guava drink that my mother and my husband had. There is an adult rate and a child rate, and the charges were added to our room.

We all slept comfortably in our duplex apartment that Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, we woke up excited to visit the beach at our hotel, but first, we showered, got dressed, and went to breakfast at La Veranda.

There were no additional charges to our room for our Sunday morning visit to La Veranda because breakfast was included in the price of our stay at the hotel. As the restaurant sits just a few steps away from the beach, we then went directly to the beach after breakfast. We enjoyed the water and the tranquil atmosphere at Canella Beach, which was a great way to start our day in anticipation of an amazing 14-day Caribbean cruise that would begin in a few hours.

Overall, we had an adequate stay at Canella Beach Hotel before our cruise.

We returned to the hotel after our cruise. The Canella Beach Hotel staff were warm and friendly on both occasions, which, of course, enhanced the experience.
When we checked in early after returning from our cruise, our duplex was not yet ready, so we were provided with towels for the beach, and a storage room for our luggage, so we had a full day’s access to the premises, which was lovely. We bought lunch at the on-site restaurant, ate at the beach, and relaxed until our room was ready. Even then, we stayed at the beach until we were ready to go to the duplex apartment.

This time, after our cruise, we were assigned to Duplex 348 and 349. Our pre-cruise duplex was much nicer than our post-cruise duplex. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and even the view was much better in Duplex 322 and 323 than in Duplex 348 and 349. There was also an unpleasant smell by the elevators that are used to access Duplex 348 and 349, and there was a musty smell in the duplex itself. As it was just for one night, and we were super tired from an amazing two-week voyage, we didn’t formally complain to the staff about it, but obviously, I made a note to self.

We would consider staying at Canella Beach Hotel again if cruising from Guadeloupe, and we would likely request Duplex 322 and 323.

Room tip: If staying in a duplex, consider requesting Duplex 322 and 323.

The hotel has a private beach which is beautiful. But that’s all positive I can say about this hotel.

A summary of my not so good experience:
- Very unfriendly guy at the reception. Never experienced something like that. He truly did not like his job I think. The next day however there was a woman who did speak some English and she was friendly.
- My room was a bit strange. I opened my door and first thing I saw was stairs in front of me and a closed door to my left. I did not understand but apparently the room was up the stairs. It was narrow and difficult to carry my heavy bag up.
- The locker did not work.
- The badroom was very clean and good though.
- The bed was really hard.
- On my first night I was laying in bed, checking some things on my phone and then heard voices really close, I thought there was someone in my room so I was a bit scared. Then I found out it came from downstairs, apparently the door I saw down the stairs was a door to the bathroom of the people in the room under mine. At least it was closed but I could hear EVERYTHING. There were some people there, talking to eachother in French very loud. It was like they were in my own bathroom. It was terrible, could even hear them going to the toilet very, very clearly.
- The floor of the stairs and the bedroom was really dirty.
- There was no blanket, only a thin sheet to sleep under.
- Breakfast was okay. Not so bad. I have to say eating your breakfast with a view om the beach always makes it better.

This hotel is too expensive for what you get.
