A gem of a place, right on the beach. Beautiful wood construction, charming features and well maintained. Hospitable host and excellent service. Always enjoy our visit, we live for winters in the area. You will not be disappointed.

I am writing this review on our last night at Tambor Tropical. We have been here 8 nights as part of a birding tour.
The resort consists of 5 two story octagonal units that have a Samoan architectural influence. The units are made of several different types of Costa Rican wood and they are polished and maintained beautifully. The craftsmanship of the woodwork is exceptional.
AC is excellent in the rooms, very comfortable queen bed and lots of hot water and shower pressure.
The pool area is lovely. Heated pool.
But what makes this place special is the staff. Juan Carlos, the manager, is one of the nicest people we have had the pleasure to meet. The wait service staff of Christina, Fatima, Sabrina and Maggie were simply superb.
The food is very good-our favourites were the Nicoya fish plate and the Bombay shrimp curry dish. The cheeseburger and fries were just like home.
Finally, I cannot say enough about the birds. We saw over 160 species in one week in the Tambor Area. The scarlet macaws are regularly seen and the hotel grounds, beach, Panica River and ponds are teeming with birds.
The beach is a volcanic beach. It is not as pretty as the white sand beaches of the Caribbean and the sand is not as firm as the sand on Florida or Caribbean islands. There is nothing wrong at all with the beach but it does require a change of mind set.
The view of Tambor Bay from the room and the magnificent sunrises rates a 9/10.
You will love this hotel and all it has to offer.

Room Tip: Ask for second story room.

When we first arrived the gate opened and we were driving through a golf coarse and beautiful ocean front mansions. Then we see a sign that said hotel registration. We pulled up to this beautiful beach with coconut trees and hammocks. The best part it was quiet and secluded. The very friendly guy checking us in told us we should go to look out point and see the Sunset. So we went up a tail into the jungle till we got to a gate and walked through and saw the most beautiful sunset. They took us to our room which was breathtaking gorgeous. We had a ocean view room and it was quite big. They also gave us a bottle of Spanish wine complimentary. I mean I was in heaven! We ate dinner at the restaurant which is outdoors over looking the ocean. The food was amazing! We also got complimentary buffet breakfast there in the morning. At night the arts are so bright you've never seen anything like it. I laid in a hammock and just got taken away. I know I was in a very special place. The pool was also a lot of fun. We jumped in the pool then into the ocean and again in the pool. Just paradise. We really didn't want to leave. Please go you won't be disappointed. Our drone footage will be out soon. Airreel.com then go to Costa Rica link

Room Tip: Stay at least 2 days or more. Very magical place

What a positive surprise; we stayed for a few days over the Christmas period. We really liked our all- wood ( polished even on the veranda) downstairs room. In the travel guide they ask "how do they keep this up". Well the answer is an onsite workshop and diligent maintenance.
By the way the best birdwatching was in that part of the property (saw a collared Aracari- toucan there).
Great service throughout. The hotel is good for exploring nearby Curu- and Cabo Blanco reserves.
We would come back !

Thank you. Indeed, there's great bird watching right from our pool and gardens. The trail behind the hotel and the one in the river are awesome too. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to a return visit. Pura vida!

If you are looking for action, party and laud music, this hotel is definately NOT for you. This is a calm place with focus on nature and walks on the beach. There are some guided tours if you would like, that the hotel gladly assist you with. A drawback is the poor breakfast, which leaves nobody happy. Very friendly and helpfull staff.
