We really enjoyed our two nights at La Sommita and our dinner at Cielo. The people that work at the hotel and restaurant are friendly, gracious, and attentive. The restaurants that they recommended for lunch and dinner were uniformly excellent and our breakfasts and dinner at the hotel were delicious. Our room was not large, but was well designed and had a great view of the Adriatic and miles and miles of olive groves. A/C worked fine (it was in the mid-90s while we were there) and housekeeping kept the place spotless. It is not a lay-by-the-pool resort, but there are many great beaches nearby - we did day trips to Polignano and Monopoli from Ostuni. We would absolutely go back.

Ostuni and La Sommita Relais were the first stay on our Puglian holiday and the hotel made sure we got off to a great start.

Nothing was too much to trouble for the reception team when I was arranging our stay and also while were guests. The journey in the tuk tuk from the parking area works well and our first sight of the town centre as we drove through at night will stay long in the memory.

We booked the Il Mare and Aranceto rooms, both in fact benefit from a sea and garden view, with the raised bed helping to see the view while relaxing. We found the rooms to be large and comfortable, though the reviews saying they are warm are fair, we coped fine with this, it’s probably a personal thing. We also loved our meal at Cielo, a real treat.

Overall we loved our stay, my only constructive feedback would be about lunch arrangements (not Cielo), it would be better if there were tables set-up ready and/or staff asking guests using the pool and other sitting areas if they would be having lunch, rather than the uncertainty we had about it and the awkwardness when Cielo thought we wanted lunch in our ‘pool gear’. There is a lunch menu available and it was very good once we had it, just not very clear how to go about it.

Let's start with the good stuff! The hotel is beautiful and the staff welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was terrific. Massage was amazing!
The Michelin one star restaurant totally dropped the ball. It took almost 4 hours for dinner. When we asked if they could move things along because we were exhausted from traveling and wanted to go to bed we were told "this is fine dining". Really?

The room we were given was claustrophobic 2 stories with one tiny window on the second floor and hot. They found us another room but were told we would have to change the next day as they were booked. The biggest problem was the lack of air conditioning. They brought us a fan (that didn't work). They insisted the AC was working but at check out they admitted that it isn't very good when it's really hot! Isn't that the point of AC? It was over 100 degrees outside. The bed was on a platform with metal edges and my husband sliced his toe in the middle of the night when he got up to use the bathroom.
It also very difficult to get to. You have to park your car far from the hotel and they pick you up in a small vehicle that only holds 3 people. We were 5 with bags which meant people had to wait outside in the heat for over 15 minutes while they took 1 group and then returned to get the rest of us.

I would love to recommend the hotel based on the employees and the beauty of the property but all the problems we encountered make that impossible.

After reading some of the reviews I was confident with my selection of La Sommita. My wife and I recently stayed here as part of a 10 day trip in Puglia. Along the way we stayed at 2 other 5 star properties and one 4 star. I never really write negative reviews but we were so disappointed with our stay and the quality of service that I felt obligated to bring some reality. I think other people must just have bottomed out standards or they get paid to write these. Not even close to 5 star.
Upon arriving we were very excited. You park at the bottom of Ostuni and take a nice little motor car up to the hotel. Walking in the hotel is fine. Lobby is nice, not great. Old magazines and brochures adorn the lobby and they give you a welcome drink of water with rosemary in it which is kind of odd. (please note rest of the hotel is in fact beautiful). Thats where it ends.
THE ROOM - We stayed in a double room. When they brought us up i initially noticed the room was quite warm (it was in the 90s the whole time) but Francesca (main hotel worker we dealt with) pointed out the AC to us which she implied simply wasn't turned on.
So the ROOM #14 - No AC. It didnt work. air came out like someone was flapping a post it note. When we complained they said that was how all the rooms were. There were 80 year olds staying here, maybe they couldnt handle the cold? Anyway they brought a fan up. Don't run the fan on high though because it squeaks and you wont sleep because it sounds like a screaming banshee. So we put it on low.So thats one. The view. There wasnt any but a wall. I went down and asked for another room and Francesca said "they all have no view." I asked to pay more for a bigger room "sorry suite has no view." ok whatever. The shower - it's 2 ft by 2 ft. No that is not an exaggeration. It is multi leveled but to stay in the shower without crashing your head and dying its a 2 X 2 area. I'm 6'1 210. It was horribly uncomfortable. I had just come from staying in a cave in Matera (Sant Angelo a real 5 star) and the cave shower was 3 times the size. Bed? i guess its a European thing but as comfortable as sleeping on sandpaper. Oh and I had to sleep on top anyway because the room was 1000 degrees. But who needs sleep when you're in 100 degrees all day and night right!
Frette towels so ill give them some points back. But they only give you two. This was garbage for $400+ a night when all the other Ostuni 4-5 stars are like $150.
Having come from Lecce and staying at a 5 star called La Fiermontina (a magnificent true 5 star) it was like going from heaven to hell.
The service - Francesca was as useless as a screen door on a submarine. Reservations? couldnt get a one. Wine tastings? Nada. Restaurants? Zilcho. Could not do anything for us. From the room type to the AC, to the reservations....she even messed up when we told her no meat in the breakfast we were taking to the airport in the morning. Opened it up...MEAT sandwich.
Pool area. Tons of people....No wait staff. We were out there an hour and had to ask someone from the restaurant to get us drinks. No one comes out. Then somehow 2 aperol spritz (yeah they tasted perfect damn hard to mess that up) and 2 bottles of water took 30 min. No not a joke we were laughing about it with a british couple next to us.
I'm sorry but they should lose the star. And these other posts are lies. Save the money. Stay elsewhere. PERIOD.

Room tip: DONT STAY IN ROOM 14. Or any doubles apparently there's no views in any.

Nicely situated at the top of the picturesque old town. Attentive service. There's a parking lot a 10-min walk away that you can use. Very large room, and a nice minimalist stone feel - though as they are a bit cave-like, there wasn't really a view. There are some high-up windows that let light in. There is also a pretty impressive terrace area overlooking the countryside, perfect for bringing a well-made drink from the bar.
