Der Marienhof- mein Vitalhotel
Reviewed 15 August 2016

we enjoyed the outdoor pool which was very clean, the wellness area which was very pleasant , although the steam room was not very hot and we noticed that on Saturday when we wanted to use it, it was all switched off. we also used the small but modern gym. Breakfast was a good buffet with lots of choice. We were disappointed by one thing - on the web site it mentioned free pony riding for children under 14 which appealed to my grandchildren. When we asked about it, the receptionist said that it wasn't available, but we saw that even in the hotel brochures in reception, there were big photos of children doing pony riding. The walk to Velden centre is a good 15 minutes especially if carrying lots of beach stuff. Our rooms were at the back which meant some early morning noise when food deliveries were being made.although there was a number to call, the reception and bar were not always staffed (at reasonable times) and one evening when the weather was poor and we wanted to play board games in the bar and have a drink, the bar was closed.

Room Tip: Traditional decor land hotel

We arrived for a five day stay and my husband's employer had booked us into this hotel. Interesting place! The kids were really happy with the fantastic pool area, which kept us busy most days. The slight scent of farm became a bit of the charm. The big downside is the fact that there is no option to eat dinner at the hotel, and the village requires a good walk. We made plans to walk into the village in the afternoons, and tried a few of the restaurants. Some of the evenings we went to the local grocery store to pick up bits of food which we kept in the commune refrigerator at the hotel. Worked ok. The hotel also let's you borrow bicycles to ride to the village, but to remember that it is a steep down-hill ride to go there and quite a tough up-hill route back. Very nice breakfast and indeed very enjoyable and helpful staff!

Stopped off for one night en route to Salzburg. Hotel seemed a bit dated, bathroom small and separate WC. Not bad though, comfortable enough and friendly staff. Breakfast was good, with produce from adjacent farm.

Velden is a pretty resort at one end of the Worthersee, a long and attractive lake. This hotel sits on the hillside above the town and the majority of the rooms have a view of the massive and impressive Karawanken mountain range which forms a natural barrier with Slovenia a few miles away.

It is a traditional family hotel on a large site with an attached working farm. The owner, Peter, is warm, helpful and welcoming and has great sense of humour. He speaks fluent English and gave us some great recommendations in the town.

We were pleased we had asked for an upper floor room and our balcony looked out over the hotel pool and garden to the distant mountains which have many moods. The room was clean and spacious with a parquet floor and many mod cons including a safe. Double bed but separate mattresses! There was a communal fridge in the hall an arrangement that seemed to work fine.

The breakfast is outstanding! A real coffee machine which grinds the beans as you wait and a huge selection of meats, breads, cheeses, grains, mueslis, fruits etc. plus, of course sausage! The staff are very helpful and a chef is on hand to cook your really fresh eggs - boiled or omelette or with bacon. All the food is local and fresh which is a huge benefit.

Breakfast can be taken on the long open balcony or inside the dining room. The grounds are attractive and a winding path leads down past the pool to a pond and gazebo. The pool is cleaned every morning, there is a very shallow baby pool plus sunbeds and shades or deeper shade under the trees. Snacks and drinks can be ordered round the pool and full meals are available at lunchtime but not currently in the evening (though it has clearly had a full evening restaurant in the near past).

The road at the back leads down in a 15 minute walk to the town passing the cow sheds on the way - no farmyard smells at the hotel - and crossing the railway line. The best public bathing in the lake is at the Hotel Europa, 8 euros each for the day. Your first visit is free with the Velden discount card you are given at the hotel.

There are many good restaurants including the Aqua and Leopold Hotel both overlooking the lake - look out for the coloured fountains in the lake, spectacular at night. Main meal prices in euros are currently the equivalent of the same price in pounds in UK so very good value!

The travel was simplicity itself. We picked up a hire car at Vienna Airport, headed towards Vienna then followed signs to the A2 and Graz and then take the A2 all the way turning off finally at West Velden. Carry 20 and 50 cent coins for the roadside loos (all immaculate in Austria). Be aware that at the Vienna end of the journey the inside lane sometimes will become an exit lane.Further on it is always ahead so you won't suddenly have to choose.

The ferry takes 2hrs to go the length of the lake to Klagenfurt and is well worth doing. Klagenfurt is very pretty with some great shops. On the way look out for the very pretty churches at Maria Worth (no public bathing though - hotels only - and when we were there very limited lunch options).

It is as well to know a few words of German and carry a dictionary/phrase book. Many waiters do speak English but not all and menus do not always have a translation.

Room Tip: Overlooking the front (south facing). Upper floors have the best views.
