We had a wonderful week at Brockan Cottage. The house was beautiful and had everything we needed. A great location for exploring Orkney. Thanks!

“Amazing Cottage”

We spent a wonderful week at Brocken Cottage at the beginning of June. The cottage is amazing! A wonderfully warm welcome from the custodian when we arrived and a delicious bottle of wine to start our holiday off. The cottage is literally in the middle of nowhere but so easy to find (we google mapped it prior to arriving to work out which lane it was on).

Such a spacious cottage - we used two of the three huge bedrooms. There is also a utility room, bathroom with shower and a shower room. The open plan kitchen-lounge-diner is spectacular. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with every single utensil, pot, pan you need. More than you need! A real home from home! The lounge is split into three areas - lounge area with a sofa and seats and open fire, the dining area with a huge amazing wooden table and a small seating are with blankets, in front of the huge windows overlooking Marwick Bay. Just fields and fields and fields. Standing outside you could just hear birdsong, and at night, just the waves crashing if the breeze was blowing in the right direction.

So peaceful so close to other places Birsay is near, with an amazing tea room. Try their sandwiches and cakes. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the ruins of Birsay Palace, where there is a small car park. Or it has its own. There are so many costal walks here where you may see seals, dolphins and even Puffins.

Walk down to Marwick bay from the house (about a 7 minute walk) and turn left and walk up to the top of the cliffs and you may see puffins on these cliffs too.

One hint for the island as a whole. All the long stay car parks are free! And drive out to the north part of the island toward Evie. Stunning views here too. Just anywhere on the island in any weather is beautiful. And drive down to South Ronaldsay, over the Churchill Barriers to see amazing views and shipwrecks, or up to Orphir to see stunning views of all of Scapa Flow. And if you get the chance, try and macaroni cheese pie!!!

The only drawback is the lack of darkness at night in the summer. It rarely got dark (the nighttime photo attached was 1am. The sun had set an hour or two before and was due to rise a couple of hours later). The blinds in the cottage are very thin so if you like a dark room, take eye masks - a top we were told which came in handy!

I left a little bit of my heart on Orkney. I left it t Brocken Cottage to keep it safe!

“Excellent cottage and location ”
Reviewed 10 June 2019 for a stay in June 2019

We stayed here for 7 nights. The cottage is on West Mainland near the Kitchener Memorial. Also relatively nearby are Brough of Birsay, Skara Brae, Stromness etc. The cottage is light and airy and maintained to a high standard, contemporary design and stylish. The custodian lives a short walk away who gave us a wonderful welcome. On arrival there were some local goodies waiting. The property was clean and well equipped. There is a lovely view of the coast and surrounding farmland (cows and calves when we were there). The aspect from the view window is south east through to west, so plenty of potential sun.

“Wonderful cottage in a beautiful area.”
Reviewed 10 June 2019 for a stay in May 2019

The location of the cottage is out of town in a quiet rural setting, very close to the coast and in the middle of a working farm. The cottage itself is beautiful, very well appointed and spacious. The kitchen, unlike most rentals, contained everything from coffee to every spice imaginable, while the large bedrooms are very comfortable and also well appointed. Sitting in the front windows (shown in the photo) early in the morning is one memory I'll have of Orkney for a very long time. We were sad to leave. Thanks Joan.
