The centre of Helmsley has always been renowned for its floral displays but not so much this year.
We visited just after le Tour de Yorkshire and were disappointed by the town’s displays - perhaps the very hot, unseasonal weather was to blame.
We are now back in Helmsley in mid-September and there is a marked improvement in the displays with one notable exception - the Royal Oak. This pub used to have the best display in town but now they have pathetic looking plastic flowers in all their window boxes. Why?
Cannot review the bar, food or rooms as not experienced any of these - the place looks so uninviting.

Stayed one Saturday night, clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Music was loud and could be heard in rooms and till late, so don't stay here if you want piece & quiet. Breakfast was tasty and filling. Only grumble, no real ale on, due to cleaning pipes, all 3 at same time? Had to suffer a pint of smooth, yuk!

Only stayed one night, room was dated but clean and comfortable. The breakfast was decent and all the staff were helpful and polite. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel with no noise issues, slept very well. There was no free roadside parking when we arrived so we parked the car in the long stay car park over night for £6, overall a very pleasant stay.

Set in the Market Square is a great location but can be tricky finding the free parking in the nearby streets. Lots of lovely thick white towels, all very clean. Very friendly service. A very tiny TV located on top of the wardrobe, luckily we didn’t want to watch anything. The windows were traditional sash so were difficult to keep open also everyone from the street could see in! Lots of tea and coffee choices also 2 lots of biscuits and free bottled water.
The breakfast was very good, lovely waitress and plenty of choice. Very generous sausage sandwich but slightly disappointing standard sliced bread. Slight criticism was there were no sweeteners, only sugar.
