We booked a room for a quick getaway at the last minute. Flying from uk and then a 5 hour drive at night in -6 degrees weather and snow. We tried calling them from 8pm and no answer eventually arriving at around 11pm.

There was no one there!!

There was no note no cell phone number. They had just left and all this without the slightest of calls to ask where we were. My wife had even called them at 10am the same day to say 'see you later' but still they just left us out in the cold!!

Avoid at all costs

We came across this after a hike from Les Vigneaux up to Puy St Vincent. This is a very quiet area in the summer months, so finding such a superb restaurant was a real blessing. We didn't stay here, but the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly.

We booked a large table for an evening meal. The food was just edible but the service slow and not concerned. We had a birthday so a cake was pre-ordered without checking the price first. The bill was horrendous and they had overcharged on meals and childrens drinks. This was immediately changed when we confronted them, however, they then demanded over 50 euros for the cake. We had not agreed a price when ordering so had to pay. They tried to rip us off and didn't realise that we holiday in Puy several times a year with a large group. They have, therefore, lost much future business.

I stayed at this hotel as part of a group, but wouldn't hesitate to return on my own. It's central to many excellent national park spots to explore, whether you're hiking or driving. The accommodations were clean, if a bit dated, and the staff are mostly polite, helpful, and pleasant. This is a ski area, so the hotel was off-season quiet. There's a pool, sauna, and a games room as well should you tire of the great outdoors. The breakfast selections were above average, and our dinners were nicely prepared, though too much food if you're accustomed to light evening meals. There's a comfortable bar (only place I was able to get decent wifi) and snacks as well pre-dinner. Prices on the bar menu seemed quite reasonable. The location is loveely, and the near town of Vallelouise has shops that can handle most of your needs. Besides your French phrase book, you should pack a flashlight as .afternoon thunderstorms occasionally knock out the power. Overall, a great experience.

Room tip: Front rooms overlook car park, pool; rear rooms quieter, but less ov a view from your balcony.

The bad - very old fashioned and worn 1960's or 1970's bedrooms, tiny beds with annoying footboards so that tall-ish adults don't fit, unpleasant ensuite bathrooms and the bedrooms are very hot and arid with seized-up radiator valves so that there is no means of lowering the heat. Also, the worst 'wifi' signal ever encountered, despite correctly entering the codes on several types of device - in the end we gave up.

The good - a nice bar, a lovely restaurant which must have had a high quality renovation in recent years, gorgeous food, polite management/owners/staff (especially the young guy who appeared to be the head waiter ... who was very friendly with good English language skills) and a generous/varied buffet breakfast. Also, the bill was good value.

If they found the €€€€ investment to properly renovate their bedrooms and replace those beds, then improve their wifi network, this could be a very good hotel.

Room tip: Stay elsewhere until one day the owners spend serious money on the bedrooms. Very good restaurant though,
