First Hostal we saw after a long tiring plane/bus journey. The staff were very friendly but didn't speak much English (I speak both). The hammocks were very nice to relax in and the terrace up top was a great place to relax and enjoy some fresh fruit. The room had a big fan to help keep the heat at bay during the night and had an awesome water pressure shower.

We checked in at 5:30am after our overnight bus trip. It was very accommodating of them to let us have the room that early in the morning and only pay for one night's stay. It was $25 for a "double" room.

The room left a lot to be desired:
- there large screen windows along the top of two walls that could not be covered, all noise outside could be heard in the room
- many large ants were crawling around inside
- the fan had a frightening wobble
- there were no rooms with beds larger than a twin, and they didn't push together because of the frames

Two other downsides, the hotel clerks continually tried to sell us tours even after we declined, and the hotel is NOT on the beach front as indicated on the map; it is one block in from the beach.

Affordable, well located, and comfortable. Good sized kitchen (not many pots and pans). Left a beer in the fridge and someone else took it, but I guess that's likely at any hostel. Other than that, yeah, there is a lot to like about this place. Definitely recommend it!

I stayed at Itapoa three times during Spring 2014, twice for about a week each. I stayed in the far back twice and the other time toward the front. Rooms have good fans, insect nets, and hot water. Breakfast is served overlooking the beach: scrambled egg, fruit, juice, tea or coffee, bread, butter, jam, and on some days home-made chocolate spread. The owners also have a rainforest reserve and cocoa farm in the Chocó (http://itapoareserve.com) and Raul, a biologist, splits his time there. Chocolate is hand made in the Itapoa community kitchen over two or three days about weekly. Beer, water and drinks are available for sale. Raul, Maria and their daughter are all very helpful, patient, and attentive. One night when I was staying in the northeast corner there was some sort of party going on nearby with highly amplified music until about 3 or 4am; otherwise, the hostel was quiet and peaceful. The location is perfect — north end of town with nothing between the hostel and the beach except the Malecon; it is away from the noise but only a few blocks along the Malecon to shops, restaurants, and beach bars. Good wifi in common areas.
