Affordable, well located, and comfortable. Good sized kitchen (not many pots and pans). Left a beer in the fridge and someone else took it, but I guess that's likely at any hostel. Other than that, yeah, there is a lot to like about this place. Definitely recommend it!

I stayed at Itapoa three times during Spring 2014, twice for about a week each. I stayed in the far back twice and the other time toward the front. Rooms have good fans, insect nets, and hot water. Breakfast is served overlooking the beach: scrambled egg, fruit, juice, tea or coffee, bread, butter, jam, and on some days home-made chocolate spread. The owners also have a rainforest reserve and cocoa farm in the Chocó (http://itapoareserve.com) and Raul, a biologist, splits his time there. Chocolate is hand made in the Itapoa community kitchen over two or three days about weekly. Beer, water and drinks are available for sale. Raul, Maria and their daughter are all very helpful, patient, and attentive. One night when I was staying in the northeast corner there was some sort of party going on nearby with highly amplified music until about 3 or 4am; otherwise, the hostel was quiet and peaceful. The location is perfect — north end of town with nothing between the hostel and the beach except the Malecon; it is away from the noise but only a few blocks along the Malecon to shops, restaurants, and beach bars. Good wifi in common areas.

The hostel is very nice located. Nothing is far. Close to local market, shown by the owner, beach, restaurants and bars.
Rooms get cleaned every day, if you want so. You get hot, I mean hot!, shower. Every bed has a moskytonet. There's fast wifi - on a grey day I streamed movies! The kitchen is clean and workable.
You can take a taxi or bus to Montañita for partying and keep staying in this hostel to rest on the next day. 'cause you don't get rest in Montañita.
Enjoy staying there!

Paid 20 bucks for a nice room for two people. This hostel had excellent service, which provided me with great information about the area and other spots around Ecuador. So far the best hostel I have stayed at for 20 dollars while traveling all the way down the pacific coast. We could walk to the beach in less than a minute or go grab cold beers right down the street from a local vendor. Slept very well here and also had the pleasant suprise of the first hot shower I have had in weeks! I would certainly go here again if I was willing to pay 20 dollars. You do get a few extra bonuses.

I stayed in this place this May 2014. It's located in the center, not right next to the beach but puerto lopez is a small beach town that nothing is too far from the beach. It's a nice place with a pretty garden, communal kitchen, decent rooms and service. I would definitely recommend it!
