“What nobody told you about Camping del Garda”
Reviewed 17 October 2011

Firstly its also known as Gardaturist or Residence Gardaturist. Anyway we had stayed for 3 nights in a mobile home by renting direct with them (the voucher was issued by 'Europlan') and wanted to share some experiences which nobody seem to have written earlier. We arrived at the campsite walking from the train station, it was about 10 minute walk not bad even with luggage, but the route is not signposted at all so my printout of the area from G-maps proved handy. At reception we were given the key and map showing our unit, which was a further 5 minute walk. On reaching the unit, it was dark with no lights. After managing to open the door fumbling with the key in the dark, none of the switches seemed to work. Thats when I looked up the info sheet given to us at reception where it said we must switch on the mains to get power. Took a bit of searching to find the mains switch - it was in the bedroom after which we finally had lights ! As it was stuffy inside the closed mobile unit, I turned on the AC but wait.. we are only allowed 8 hours of AC use by default, and have to pay for more ! We were given a smart card which we insert into the AC power unit, which I suppose tracks the time. Anyway as it was cool during our stay we didnt use the AC except to cool the rooms briefly after we returned in the evenings from our day trips.
Then I wanted to answer nature's call but hey no toilet paper rolls in the loo. Cant buy them in the campsite as the onsite supermarket is not operating in this non-high-season period. The outside supermarket is a 15 minute walk away but cant even go there as it closes at 7 ! I also prepared to take a hot shower after our arrival late evening.. but alas the hot water tap just spewed warm water for a few seconds and then it was cold water from both taps all the while ! Next day morning tried again, no hot water. Called reception from my cell (no phone in the rooms) and they said they look into it. Some time later workers arrived and hot water came from the taps at last. But I had more surprises in store.. after starting the shower, the hot water ran cold after few minutes.. although the wash basin tap had hot water all right. After a lot of struggle I figured out the secret.. the shower tap only gives hot water when the washbasin hot water tap is left on ! Useful tip for those unfortunate souls who have to suffer this fate.
Anyway, we also found there was no cleaning pads/liquid provided in the kitchen, although they expect us to do the final cleaning. Enquiring at the reception, they said we should buy it from the market. A bit irritating, considering the onsite shop is closed and at the supermarket i have to buy a huge pack of 6 rolls/ pads. Also no floor mat in the bathroom so if some water spills on the floor it makes the whole unit bit dirty. We ended up renting a towel set - 1 bath towel and 2 hand towels for 9 Euros (which I found steep) and used one of them to mop wet patches on the floor. They expect us to seperate our garbage and dispose them off in plastic bags, but there arent any bags provided. Luckily we had a few spare bags with us. Ah and the amusing part about the mobile home.. if you are lying in bed and somebody else is moving about the house, it kinda feels like an earthquake .. not to mention the creaking sounds from the wooden floor. All in all, although the campsite setting and the mobile unit was lovely, this frugality in providing guests with barebones and expecting them to bring everything else - spoiled the stay. I can only bring so much in my Ryanair cabin bag after all. And the free bus to Grdaland only runs in high-season we were told, so we had to trek to the station to catch the shuttle to the park. By the way other folks have written about the mobile homes having heating, but I didnt find any room heating in our unit. The mobile unit itself although novel, modern and clean, is quite cramped and if 1 person has to move about the other person pretty much has to sit or lie on the couch/bed !
Still will give it 3 stars.. considering the good things which other reviewers have written about.

Stayed 2 weeks in August with our 4 children aged 10,13,13,and 16. Best holiday we've had yet. A big hit with everyone including the parents. Especially loved eating takeaway pizza and watching the amazing sunsets on the beach, loved Peschiera town centre whcih is very sophisticated, very upmarket, lots of gorgeous restaurants and only 15 mins from campsite.
The entertainment on site is a bit dodgy, very 1970's, could be a bit lary, if you like Karaoke and Blue's Brothers tribute acts you may find it OK, I thought it was best avoided and the key to a fab holiday is to get off site.
The children loved hiring the pedalos, jumping off the pier and the very best day and highly recommended is hiring a speedboat for half a day and whizzing round the lake James Bond style.

Excellent location, easy to travel to Milan, Venice and the many other beautiful towns and the setting of the site is truly beautiful with amazing scenery. The parc has excellent facilities and is perfect for families or couples. The accommodation is like home from home. Would recommend Thomson Al Fresco to anyone thinking of going. Del Garda has it all whether you want a stroll by the lake, the rides at Gardaland or Movieland. Even if you are on a budget, the parc will definitely keep the children occupied. Cannot speak more highly of Del Garda - absolutely loved it.

Stayed here in August 2011 with the family. Three boys (12,10 and 3) loved it, and there were 3 separate pool sites plus the lake so plenty of places to swim . Older boys especially liked jumping off the piers into the lake !

Site is large and well laid out, was very busy in the middle of August. Local town is about 15 minutes walk, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the area. We weren't impressed with the camp restaurant, found the service to be quite poor.

We drove down (it is about 800 miles from Calais) and having the car was a big bonus. Made day trips to Venice, Verona and other parts of the lake. Public transport is ok (rail station in Psechiera, plus buses and ferries on the lake) but having your own wheels makes things a bit more flexible.

We stayed with Thomson Al Fresco in a 3 bed caravan; impressed with Thomson, air conditioning a must as it was over 30 degrees every day.

Would stay here again if we came back to this town.

We stayed for 2 weeks at Camping Del Garda and had a good stay. The location is pretty good with it being right on the shore of the lake. There are 3 pools which are good although the lifeguards to act as fun police at times stopping kids jumping in and playing ball or with floats. The reception staff are very helpful and are all multi lingual. The on site kids club is a bit rubbish to be honest. My 6 year old liked going but the 10 year old was bored with it as all they did was colouring . Lake Garda is a fabulous location and we did not have a car , we travelled down by train from Milan. Lots of people did have cars and they might come in useful as the ferries on the lake are very pricey for a family of 4. All in all a good stay.
