we made approx 12 km long trip to the Afrata beach - just followed the road from Kolimbari (and hitchhiked partly) on the hill to Afrata village (few tavernas available) and down via small gorge to Afrata beach, tiny, clean, sun beds and umbrelas for free, warm and clear see and small beach bar serving perfect cretan salat. We visited the place in one calm October day and I felt here as in paradise for a while... We used the same way for return and admired the calmness of the countryside, stunning views on Cretan shore and intensive nature smell for Cretan pines.

Loved this spot. Small, perfect. One cafe. Free umbrellas if available. Yes bathroom. No pressure. Had calamari and many Alphas.

What a great find. We visited twice & loved the beach. The water is incredibly clear & fantastic for snorkelling. It's a must for a visit when around the area. The views on the drive there are breathtaking. Highly recommended!
Only let down is the restaurant on the beach.

Afrata is a charming small town near Kolymbari. There is a well know monastery worth visiting. On the drive up there is a small unofficial area for swimming and fishing. Well worth the trip.
