We’re a Bulgarian-American family of 5 doing a road trip across Bulgaria, and we liked the Old Lovech guest house so much we changed our plans to stay an extra day. It fully deserves the high ratings given it by other travelers, and our stay there was one of the highlights of our trip. Dimitar Lalev is an extraordinary host, well-informed about the history of Bulgaria who will regale you with stories and explain the historical photos and maps on the walls of the hotel. He gave us excellent advice about what to see and where to eat in the area, and even went out of his way to return a hat we had left behind when we left. And his wife makes excellent jams as part of the generous Bulgarian breakfast they serve. The guest house building is in the old part of town, just steps from the fortress above and the ethnographic and Vasil Levski museums and the covered bridge below. Built in 1804, it has been tastefully remodeled as a hotel, with views out the window of the old stone roofs and greenery. Inside we found everything perfect for our stay, with quiet evenings. The guest house has parking but the streets in the old town are extremely narrow with cobblestones. You can find the guest house on Google Maps by searching for “Guest House The Old Lovech”, but don’t follow their directions unless you have a very small car. Instead, after crossing the bridge and turning right, take the second left across from the Turkish bath. This will take you straight up before you turn left a few meters from the parking area.

Staying in Lovech? There's no discussion where to go. Forget the concrete hotels from the communistic era, there's something better: The Old Lovech. Dimitar and his wife are the most friendly hosts you could wish. He doesn't not only guide you through the narrow cobble stone streets of the old town, but also trough the local history, the places where to go, all in English. The room we had was superb, including the little private terrace. Breakfast was unparalleled by all the other breakfasts we had in far more expensive hotels later that week. Why hesitate? Go there! And say hello to Dimitar.

Dimitar Lalev and his wife are the best hosts one could wish for. They are genuine friendly, always offer to assist - if needed, share a great deal of information about the local (and not only) history and surely make you feel like home.
If you have the luck to find a room at this place - don't hesitate to book it! You'll enjoy the great atmosphere of a traditional old Bulgarian house, very well kept and clean, friendly host, great breakfast and anything else imaginable.
I'll definitely return to this place for another visit.
