Took bus 102 from airport (MYR4 per adult) but journey took close to 3 hours, which didn’t bothered us as we had a great time checking out the sights along the way. The closest stop was at Hard Rock Hotel which was only 180m from the Bayview. Check in was easy, thank you Noorlis (i hope I spelt it correctly) as she was super efficient, very friendly and professional. We were assigned a room on the 7th floor (#728) - a room with the new a/c system unfortunately the thermostat doesn’t work, there is only one fan speed - HIGH, which sounded like you have a motorbike constantly revving it’s engine in the room. That would have made sleeping in that particular room impossible, plus it was super cold. This room also had great view of the road and restaurants across the road - quite noisy with motorbikes going backwards and forwards.
A trip back down to reception and was told by a male staff (quite dismissively) that the fan controls were next to the bed. Went back to room, can’t see any buttons next to bed. This time we rang reception, the female staff explained that they were trailing new a/c system in our room, so will send maintenance to help us out. Maintenance came within 15 minutes. He spent a few minutes turning the system on and off, took the plate off the control etc, but nothing worked. He then summoned another colleague who did the same thing. Long story short after close to half an hour of turning the a/c on and off, it was concluded that the thermostat is definitely not working. They told us to go back down to reception to change to another room. Lucky we were on holiday mood, some other guests would be irate by now. We were given an upgrade to a room with the old a/c system (the fan controls were indeed next to the bed) which also need some fiddling by the same maintenance crew to get the a/c working.
The rooms are definitely dated but new our room (#606) had a renovated bathroom. We had views of the sea and helipad from our balcony, the insulation is quite effective as the helicopter take off and landing noise was reduced considerably. The shower stall is big, modern and tiles were very clean. There is also a bath in our room with shower rose as well. The toilet cistern leaked a little whenever you flush but didn't bothered us. Toiletries were too great as you only get one bottle combined shampoo/ conditioner. We had our own so that again didn't bothered us. You don't get face towel which was different.
The double bed is gigantic, made up of two king singles. My only complain is that the pillows are extremely hard, felt like sleeping on a rock, but I still had comfortable sleep during my stay.
Buffet breakfast variety is plentiful, the restaurant is cool with loads of overhead fans. Love their initiative of giving you a laminated sign to place on your table to announce to other guests that the table is occupied. Although, some guests choose to be blind, deaf and dumb and staff don't really enforce the "table occupied" rule either!
There are plenty of sun lounges around the pool and also around the lush gardens. Plenty of shady spots with the overhead canopy of the trees. Didn’t swim in the sea but beach looks clean enough. There is a joy ride helipad next to the hotel and can get quite noisy when the helicopter is taking off and landing. Bayview is at the far end of Batu Ferringhi so if isolation is your preference, then this property will suit. A metered taxi ride from Gurney Drive cost around MYR35. Uber to airport was MYR 75, took about 1hr.
The hotel provides free wifi but it is a hit and miss. Our room wifi works only if you are outside your door. Never had any wifi by the pool or breakfast area, lobby wifi again is hit and miss, you can see the wifi but it just spins round and round. So if wifi is super important to you, get your own or try another property.
In my opinion not all the staff are approachable or friendly, I suppose having to work during holiday season could dampened anyone’s spirits. Compliments to Noorlis at reception who checked us in, she was by far the most helpful and sincere of all the staff we have encountered. Even Management should learn a thing or two from her, she is the poster for 5* service and aptitude. I would recommend Bayview, it is reasonably priced and has a beach resort feel to it.
We also tried the massages by the free lance therapists on the lawn area, a full body 1 hour massage at very reasonable priced (MYR70). The only downside with this is the ambience, the massage tables are situated next to the helipad and the water sports counter - very noisy and you get people walking past all the time. There are stand up electric fans in the massage area so it wasn't too hot.
In my opinion, Bayview is a 3 to 3.5 star property in terms of facilities, decor and staff service. Some improvements needed to bring it up to 4. Overall you get what you pay.
