For our first visit to Bonifacio, we decided to flex the plastic and go for this new hotel on the block. It did not disappoint. After the slightly odd drive in due to road works in town, where it proved to be slightly off the beaten track, once we’d done the walk, its location became a lot more obvious.

The town harbour with its 30 or so bars/restaurants is 12 minutes walk down a pretty steep and slightly unpromising road to the quayside. After a bite to eat and a drink, add five minutes extra back and consider that the last 400m are without lights. The hotel offers a shuttle service, which we didn’t use, but it was only a minor issue, although maybe not outside summer.

As for the hotel, the room was stunning, the view from the room of the Citadelle rising 200ft above the harbour was breathtaking, whilst the pool, the quality of fittings and overall service was top drawer. Being greeted from the car was a very nice touch. Breakfast was simply superb and the dinner menu looked equally good but nothing really grabbed our fancy.

This one has to be in the personal Top 5.

This hotel is located in a lovely position above Bonifacio with views of the old town. I would have liked to have given this hotel a 5 rating, because everything was so good, that is apart from the bed. Lovely room, if not that big, it had everything you wanted and was well decorated and clean. However the bed was not only very soft, but sagged and the pillows were foam, with a not such good duvet. We complained and the bed was given extra support by putting something under the mattress. Not really up to 5 star standard and needs to be addressed. Swimming pool was great with nice sunbeds and cushions and the water was lovely and warm being heated by heat pumps. Breakfast was as good as any we have had anywhere. The buffet had loads of choice and the quality was excellent and matched the kitchen which is outstanding for evening meals and the subject of a separate review by me. Good free service to and from the town centre by car by the hotel reception staff. All the staff were really friendly and good. Highly recommended.

Room tip: Choose the better of the two types of room

My husband and I spent a perfect week at Version Maquis Citadelle for a late summer holiday.
Everything was absolutely fantastic. Incredibly friendly and attentive staff, gorgeous views, amazing food and wine.
We were upgraded to a suite with citadelle views and a terrace, welcomed to a bottle of local white wine.
The owners have exquisite taste and the entire place is designed with a great attention to detail and an obvious love for nature. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and a day by the infinity pool (heated) overlooking the maquis is something to look forward to.
Nestled into the landscape of the maquis, the views of the citadelle are breathtaking and a never boring spectacle.
The Breakfast buffet is an absolute delight of freshly made pastries, local cheeses and cured meats and anything in between.
Version maquis citadelle is also the perfect base to explore the beautiful beaches and town of bonifacio.
Needless to say we will be back for more !!

From arrival to departer just perfect. Ask for a room not close to the main building with view to the citadelle. Stunning views on bonifacio with sundowns. Great gin selection at the bar. Only big minus - they serve nespressos.
Great breakfast otherwise.

Brand new, modern, stylish, with great architecture, ridiculous view of the Old Town, delicious restaurant, just as good as it gets.
A five star hotel in every way, don't think twice, just go and you won't regret.
