80 Feet Under Adventures

Just the best little spot.

Los Escapados is our #1 choice on Big Corn Island for a base of operations for our tours there. Set up on top of Little Hill, the views are amazing and the sea breeze keeps everything nice and cool. The staff are really friendly and always go the extra mile. Ask for breakfast pancakes, they're incredible.

I´m travelling central américa since as a typically backpacker focused on diving spots.
For this year I´ve choosen Big Corn Island and before I started I went in touch with the
Dos Tiburones diving station which is connected with Roy´s cabins. They offered me a package with a good discount and so I setted out for the journey and at the end of the day I´ve got the best time I´ve ever had in the caribik.
Roy´s cabins are sophisticated constructed and located so that every time you see, hear and feel the blue sea. You get the morning sun into your cabin seeing far beyond Little Corn Island. Located uphill always you´ll get the ocean breeze so you don´t need moskito cape and in the morning fresh made black coffee is waiting. This time Shawn from South Africa was around for the managing, a great guy in every way, thanks for all! What I have to point out: the bathrooms are awesome! If you want to stay on the island & getting some for keeping in your memory you should go here.
And I hope one day I can return to this place.

      Hello Lemmy.
Thank you for what I can only describe as an outstanding review and our first in some time.
We greatly appreciate you taking the time to let other travellers know what to expect when you stay with us as we pride ourselves on quality of service and maintaining a high standard for our cabins.
Being away on business myself, I would trust no other than Shaun to provide a friendly, professional and authentic service for all that come to Corn Island. Thanks again and should you ever return, please look us up and we will take great care of such a wonderful guest.
      Safe Journey, Roy

We stayed 4 nights recently, and were very pleased with our choice of Los Escapados. We knew that we wanted to be in the Sallie Peachy area of Corn Island for the best snorkeling from shore. This place is within easy walking distance to several beaches, lots of restaurants, and is more relaxing than the Arenas beach area for instance. Not crowded or touristy at all, which is our preference.

The property itself is up a slight hill that one must climb and descend. Keep this in mind if you have large bags or any physical limitations, as taxis don't go up the hill. Not a problem for us, and the spot on the hillside provides both nice breezes off the Caribbean as well as nice views of the same.

We stayed in unit # 2, and it had an attached bathroom. Pretty limited space for storing anything, no small bedside tables, etc. However, the comfort level was better than many hotels in NIcaragua I'd say. The massive side windows and front door could be zipped wide open to allow loads of air flow, and we slept so well at night on the comfortable bed.

Drinks in the evening and breakfast/coffee each morning on the front deck was nice. However, once the sun got up a bit, the deck got very hot as there is not a shade cover.

Roy and Bertram were helpful when we needed anything, and our unit was cleaned daily. It's nice that they provide water to purchase in your refillable bottles to cut down on the amount of plastic trash generated on the island. (TIP: You need to have a water bottle before you get there, or buy one at a local store to reuse.)

We used the towels and beach chairs that are provided for guests to enjoy time at nearby beaches, which is a nice offering.

Hello and thank you so much for your comments.
We are very pleased that you enjoyed the level of comfort and must apologize for the lack of shelves and storage areas.
Unfortunately with canvas walls, it does not leave us much wiggle room to install shelves which is why the beds are constructed to store suitcases undereath and our over use of hooks and coat hangers for hanging belongings.
You are too right about the deck being hot before lunch, Especially this time of year. That is why you may have seen steel posts in the ground in front of the cabins that are awaiting material to build roofs over the decks. Just a little extra space and protection will go a long way for our guests, our cabins and ourselves.
Since our largest island transport boat sank to the bottom of the sea, there has been a terrible shortage of everything, including timber materials for building, food and medical supplies but I assure our future guests that they will soon have twice the space we currently have to enjoy the sea breezes.
Again thank you for taking time to review your stay. Your comments and guidance is greatly appreciated.
      Safe journey.

While Escapados may not be for everyone, there is a good argument to be made that this is the best place to stay on Big Corn. Sally Peachie IS the most beautiful part of the island. Here you get to see the most amazing hues of ocean turquoise, and there is always a wonderful breeze. Much hotter on the rest of the island and much more residential and commercial. Great places to eat are a 10-15 minute stroll in either direction.
The tent structures you sleep in are high end construction and Escapados is most assuredly not a funky ecolodge. In our month long travels through Nicaragua we have experienced the best sleep, not only due to the dreamy prevailing winds but because of the quality of the mattress and bedding. The large screens allow for the sea breeze to keep you very comfy without a/c, which was a concern for us. Spacious, immaculate bathroom detached from our tent but not an inconvenience.

The very “close to nature” feel of the cabins may be why they are not suited for everyone. If you are extremely out of condition the hike up the hill might be a challenge for you, as well.

Roy, the owner, has a rather exhaustive list of rules with the odd assurance in the manual that “we are watching you, even when you can’t see us”. We took a deep breath and kept an open mind and soon found Escapados to be just delightful. We visited a number of the higher end establishments on the island and were frankly not too impressed, but then, we love adventure and the unusual travel experience.

Big Corn island is like another world compared to the Nica mainland and to really get the feeling of this treasure in the Caribbean we highly recommend Roy’s quite special-Escapados.

Suggestions to bring: Bug spray for the evenings, flashlight, a few liters of water-although you can refill bottles here for a nominal cost, soap and shampoo. Roy includes One very fine cup of coffee per person with your room, but if you are an early riser you will need to wait until 7:30.

Thank you for your sterling comments. They are greatly appreciated and encouraging.
Definately the most detailed we have recieved in some time and in our top 5 reviews!
On a lighter most amusing note. Thank you for being the first person to mention our 'rules' or cabin guidelines and information as we call it. We have waited a long time to hear a mention of these 2 laminated pages and we chuckled hard without a noise for some time.
Some people interpret things harshly while others laugh so hard at the possible stories associated with these two pages that we need to check that our guests are okay.
What started as a serious thing to protect our business has now become an ongoing theme where we add new rules every six months because of the hilarity of the situation where in every rule we make, someone finds a new and amazingly odd way to treat our property which gives us a good laugh.
They are extensive we could not agree more but they are funny! We dream of a hotel world where no rules or guidelines need to exist. Our ability to serve would improve vastly and we would be happy for it.
However our reality is that we introduced these 2 pages for reasons of safety and comfort for my staff and guests, financial security for our future and to place responsibility on certain guests that cause reckless damage. We agree they are points that we should not need to mention but.. well it seems we do because of how frequent they occur.

Secondly we thank you because most people use our guidelines and introduction booklet for a place mat or we find them under matrasses or behind the refrigerator.
I would like to clarify to future travelers that read this review that we do not have a rule book that states 'we are watching you'.
Our introduction book has a section describing our specific aims, goals and standards for our quality of service to our guests which refers to our non interference policy and minimal disturbance so we adjust maintenence, gardening and cleaning schedules etc so as to provide a relaxing atmosphere in that you can imagine there is no staff on the property.
Our statement is an assurance of safety that says 'don't worry, we are always around watching over the hotel even when you can't see us'. My apologies for the confusion.
Our coffee I delicious thank you. We purchase the good stuff to make certain all of our service standards remain high. The earliest you can get a coffee in this neighbourhood is 7am at the dive cafe unfortunately. We always encourage to ask should you need anything and for such lovely guests, we always make an exception.
Thanks again and I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey.

Los Escapados is an absolutely incredible place to stay. The ‘tents’ are spacious, comfortable, and secure. Roy and his staff are helpful in providing island tips and their expertise. The location (north side of the island) is perfect. There is a beach close-by (Sally Peachie beach) which is a bit rocky but nice to visit. From Los Escapados the walk down to the covered bus stop is just three or four minutes and you can take the bus to Long Beach or hail a taxi. This part of the island is also the breezier side. Close-by are some great restaurants as well. Cannot recommend Los Escapados enough. I feel lucky we found this gem.

I stayed here with a friend in mid December 2017. Didn't mind climbing up the hill too much, only really a factor the first time with luggage. Roy the owner has taken care of details and was always cordial. I've stayed in tented camps in Tanzania, and I liked them. The four stars rating is only because Cabin 2 where we stayed smelled somewhat moldy. But for the price, I think it was a very good place. There were a couple of little girls, sisters, who came up and showed us how to make palm necklaces and they were very sweet.

We are pleased that we are competitive with other similar establishments you have stayed in prior to our place.
My apologies your cabin smelt like mold. There is no denying that mold is am problem in the tropics whether it be of canvas or concrete and I have had that experience in other hotels myself.
I'm afraid with the constant rain during December and the cabins being closed up for the same reason, does eccentuate the smell of mold but we would like to assure you that the cabins are mold free regardless of appearance and are treated regularly for this problem as is our bedding. I'm very sorry once again and I hope the rest of your trip was well spent.
