If you don't like winding narrow roads at the edge of a cliff with no guard rails don't go. If you do go, you will find a beautiful lake, waterfalls and hikes.

After more than 40 years of hiking, packing and lodging all sides of Yosemite, I finally made it to the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir for a hike to its thundering Wapama Waterfall in April. The Hetch Hetchy valley is as spectacular as Yosemite valley with its towering cliffs and several waterfalls but has been dammed for nearly a century to provide water for the Bay area. Walk over the O’Shaughnessy dam past signage explaining its construction, through a tunnel, and you’re on to the trail to the falls. Allow about three hours for the 5.5 mile round-trip hike to Wapama Falls, past the wispy Tueeulala. The road from Yosemite Valley out to the reservoir takes more than an hour, winding through several miles of burned forest areas. Undergrowth is gradually coming back from the past decade of fires. and we were happy to see several deer along the way.

Fantastic scenery. We only walked out a bit over a mile. Farther would have been better but even this short venture was worth going to see.

All I can really say is HUELL HOWSER did a story on this reservoir in June 2005. It is worth viewing before you go, because it should motivate you to go. When Huell was there, it was hard to believe he was in Yosemite because there were so few people on this side of the park. Of course, most people take the "short" way into Yosemite.

That being said, this portion of the park is about 1 1/2 from ANYWHERE, so bring plenty of drinks and food. You will see falls. You will see granite. You will see wildlife. And you get to see how the city of San Francisco gets fresh, clear water.

This dammed valley suffers greatly from the loss of the valley floor itself, but is still a beautiful location and a starting point for a few nice hikes (e.g., Wapama Falls). The history of the dam and its environmental opponents 90 years ago makes for interesting reading and a worthwhile opportunity to ponder honestly the trade-offs that are made between what nature offers and what we need to survive and thrive as a species.
