September 7-9

Shelly and I were looking for hotel in the Walla Walla, WA metro area. As Hilton Honors members, this property more than met our expectations for a pleasant and comfortable stay.

The Room:
We stayed in room 101 which is a large one-bedroom room. The hotel was renovated last year and was nicely finished and decorated. There was plenty of storage areas, a computer desk that was truly functional with a comfortable chair, USB charging ports and reliable internet performance. The room also featured a 37" flat panel TV. The bathroom has a standard toilet and shower/tub combo with an exterior sink. The air conditioning was highly efficient and quiet.

The Amenities:
This four-story hotel features a pool, breakfast area, business center and fitness center. The lobby has a convenience store.. The breakfast has hot and cold choices. The hot choices change on a daily basis. The fitness center appears to have state-of-the-art equipment. There is plenty of free parking.

The Location:
This hotel is located just off of Dalles Military Road about four miles from the airport and is located just outside the city center so it is in quiet location. The is a Safeway grocery store, Walmart and restaurants nearby. There are some great wineries nearby as well.

The Staff:
As I mention in all of my reviews, the staff can either make or break the experience. Jessica Guerrero is the Guest Service Manager and she personally drove us back to the airport. I could tell that Jessica hires the best people for her staff. Great front desk personnel include Jasmine, Shay and Faith. No great hotel is complete without reliable facilities people like Aaron and Craig. The pool was not working Saturday and Craig came in on his day off to get it up and running. Hotels are just buildings, its the people that make the difference.

Bottom Line:
As Hilton Honors Gold members we have a certain level of expectations for the Hampton Inn brand. The Hampton Inn and Suites, Walla Walla, WA exceeded our expectations. We would stay here again.

Dear Steve_Shelly,

This was one that we read outloud in our daily staff meetings...a few times. It is so true that it is the people that make the difference and this team is amazing. We look at this hotel as our home and our guests as OUR guests. You taking the time to write such a detailed review of how we made a difference in your weekend was the greatest honor of all. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for letting us know that we made your stay memorable.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Bushey

While frequent travelers might be excused for thinking, “All Hampton Inns are pretty much the same,” the Hampton Inn and Suites in Walla Walla is definitely a cut above many.

Although 10 years old, it presents as a much newer property, which speaks of how well it is maintained. Both the exterior and the interior common spaces show virtually no signs of wear, and the guest rooms are equally well maintained.

Guest rooms are also more generous than many. Ours, a King room, had a living/sleeping area that measured 15 x 14 feet (210 square feet), and that didn’t count the hallway and the bathroom with a double-sized walk-in shower.

The room had a King bed, a single armchair, and two padded cubes that could be used for sitting or propping one’s luggage. The étagère concealed a mini-fridge and storage shelves, and supported a 32-inch diagonal LG flat screen TV. While that seemed a bit on the small side, because of its proximity to the bed (which was really the only decent place for TV watching), it was adequate.

Off the short hall was a good-sized closet containing an iron and ironing board and an extra blanket. Across from the closet was a place on a wall to hang one’s coat or bathrobe. As we visited in early September, coats were unnecessary; however, later in the fall and winter, that could be quite handy indeed.

The workspace had plenty of plugs and USB outlets for the many electronics with which we travel and complimentary Wi-Fi with download speeds of 4.9 Mbps and upload speeds of 4.1 Mbps, as measured by an independent test site; quite adequate for checking email and social media.

Bath amenities were mid-range Neutrogena products; a cut above many properties in the mid-range hotel space. Notably, the bathroom also includes a night light, which can save many stubbed toes when trying to negotiate a strange space in the dark, and through the fog of sleep.

A hot buffet breakfast was provided every morning from 6 to 10, and the items rotated from day to day so it was less predictable than some. The dining area was open 24/7, affording guests a place to meet and talk, perhaps sharing a take-out dinner from a nearby restaurant or relax with a bottle of wine.

Speaking of wine, there is also a 24-hour pantry with snacks and wines available by the bottle, but here’s the kicker: Hotel guests can get a 10-percent discount at the Tertulia Winery, as both the winery and the hotel are owned by the same people. A very nice perk indeed for those inclined to partake of the grape.

The hotel also has an outdoor pool and hot tub, business center, fitness room, and conference space available.

As nice as it is to stay in a property that is pleasant and well-maintained, service can make or break the best of them. Service here was very good, with staff members greeting us as we passed in the hallway, breakfast room or lobby, and occasionally taking time to chat with us about the history of the town (we asked; they didn’t foist themselves upon us!). Requests for various items were met quickly, and we were made to feel more like guests than simply customers.

Three areas could use upgrading. First, the chair at the desk was not a proper task chair and working there for lengthy periods proved uncomfortable. An ergonomic chair would be a big improvement, especially for business travelers. Second, a small sofa for two to replace the single chair would be great for couples and would provide a more comfortable place to watch television. Third, in-room safes would be most welcome.

The hotel is situated among office and industrial buildings along Dalles Military Road, a short drive from a handful of restaurants and grocery stores, and about two miles from the city’s downtown core. While not exactly in the “heart of the action,” it’s just a short drive away. The Hampton Inn and Suites in Walla Walla is a great place to make your temporary home.

Clearly I didn't do enough research before heading to Walla Walla with family for a long weekend, but this is certainly not a place we will stay again. It is relatively far from the downtown region where most of the things that you want to do are located, so you will have to plan to drive everywhere. The rooms were fine, the price was a little higher than I would have expected now that I know the location, and there seemed to be a lot of noise every night we were there (not sure if there were just a lot of rowdy people staying there, or if the walls lack much insulation.

Dear Tiffany O,

We're so sorry to hear that your time with us wasn't the experience we all hoped it would be. Our location is great for the Fort Walla Walla Park and Museum and easy access on and off Highway 12 but does put you on a 3 mile drive to downtown festivities. We hope that you enjoyed your time in our beautiful city.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Bushey

Passing through and always try for a Hampton. This one was just as good as any other on the inside but located in an industrial area. Rooms were fine, had a pool, Continental breakfast was good also. Even had an area to wash motorcycles.

Very nice and comfy Hampton in Walla Walla. The room and overall hotel are extremely clean and well kept. The pool and hot tub area are the same as well for being well maintained. The staff was very welcoming and friendly upon arrival and made some nice lunch/dinner suggestions to us. Not a lot in close proximity (nothing walkable) but only a a mile or so from downtown which has plenty of dining options. Wineries are a big business in Walla Walla and you are not far from them at all at the Hampton and maybe it seems like tours pick you up there or their shuttle will take you. We were not there for the wineries on this trip but many other guests were and they all shared some good stories with us at breakfast..
The breakfast was very good for 2 of the 3 days we had it. Nice options , the usual but good, and kept the service and dining areas very clean and food was full right until 10 am. The third day, Saturday, must have had a different staff as the food was over done for the most part and they didn't seem too eager to be refilling at 9:20 which still meant 40 minutes time left and many other guests came down after we did. So that was a little disappointing and not the norm we have grown accustomed to from Hampton. Even with that it would be my hotel choice if ever in Walla Walla again for a stay.

Room tip: t was a very quiet hotel even located near a bust highway there was no night time noise.

Dear Ronald R,

Thank you for sharing how welcome our staff made you feel. They take great pride in your home-away-from-home time with us! Wineries do trump all other activities in town and we are glad that you could enjoy the great vintners and restaurants that call our city home. Breakfast continues to be an area of focus for us as we take our last step in really creating this as the amazing experience we all know it can be. The next time you are in town we look forward to highlighting our continued improvements!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Bushey
