Cedar Grove Mansion is THE place to stay while visiting historic Vicksburg. And Cedar Mansion's restaurant is THE place to eat. We have visited Vicksburg since before the first riverboat casino was opened for business. Now there are three or four at last count. But Cedar Grove, in our view, still offers the most enjoyable and most satisfying dining experience. First of all, you're eating in an historic mansion that dates to the Civil War. It is romantic and comfortable and embedded in a garden-like atmosphere, not at all like a cookie-cutter restaurant. Chef Shunta Burks oversees a menu filled with southern cooking. Deep South cooking. With a little bit of Bayou and Cajun. How about lobster ravioli or seafood crab cakes or stuffed pasta shells or Cedar Grove duck wrap (jalapeno pepper stuffed with sliced duck and cream cheese wrapped in bacon and topped with Cajun sauce)? Soups? French onion soup or seafood gumbo are highly recommended. So is the Caesar salad and the garden salad, Artisan greens topped with cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses, tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, fresh onions, hickory smoked bacon, croutons, shrimp and Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing. Pasta lovers will enjoy fettuccine Alfredo or shrimp scampi or basil chicken pasta primavera or blackened seafood pasta with shrimp, crawfish and crab meat tossed in a fettuccine pasta with Cajun Pontratrain sauce with fresh grated parmesan. Seafood entrees? Try the New Orleans catfish or eight-ounce Norwegian salmon or tilapia Meuniere Amandine or eight-ounce Sushi Grade Yellowfin tuna. If you prefer beef or chicken, choose Charleston chicken or Herb grilled chicken or eight-ounce black Angus filet mignon or 14-ounce black Angus ribeye steak. Dessert anyone? Top off a wonderful evening with brandy bread pudding or chocolate lava cake or Big Brulee cheesecake or a couple of scoops of ice cream with strawberry or chocolate topping. General Grant, a friend of Klein's wife, slept here. But he didn't eat here. He would have loved the ribeye.

My friend and I had early reservations for dinner on a Saturday night but reservations weren't necessary. We had the upper dining room totally to ourselves during our leisurely 3-hour meal.

The grounds were relatively well kept but the exterior of the mansion itself is in need of major maintenance and repair. The kind of restoration work that doesn't come cheaply.

The dining room was well appointed with a glass wall looking out to a patio. Service was attentive and pleasant. We started the evening with mint juleps that were beautiful to look at and refreshing to sip. The French Onion Soup was unique and very tasty and while I felt my tilapia was a bit salty my companion raved about the spiced seafood fettuccine.

We were so intrigued by the place that we returned the next day for a self-guided tour of the mansion and grounds. The house survived the siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War with minor damage. Within site of the Mississippi River cannon balls fired from U.S. Navy ships did hit the main house where one cannon ball is still embedded in a parlor wall.

After Vicksburg was surrendered to General Grant he stayed at the mansion and it was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. With so much history at stake one can only hope Cedar Grove Mansion will be fully restored and preserved.

This restaurant is probably the best one concerning atmosphere in the county or even beyond - the place to go for a romantic dinner. The service is very good and friendly. The menu offers salads, meat, fish, and pasta - everyone can find something suitable. We got soups and fish which all was good though not exceptional. The winelist is rather short but the Californian Zinfandel we chose was excellent.

Well, you can, here. Hit multiple times during the siege of Vicksburg, this stately home has retained evidence of three strikes. It's a lovely home to visit -- said to be the largest estate in Vicksburg -- and includes a bedroom where Ulysses S. Grant stayed (he was a friend of northerner Elizabeth Klein, bride of the owner/builder.)

This gracious antebellum mansion was the perfect start to our tour of Vicksburg. We toured the first floor of the beautifully restored antebellum mansion before being seated on comfortable chairs around a lovely table. Our delightfully Southern waitress Leslie was so adorable and funny we were immediately charmed by her infectious good humor. Intent on trying southern food we sampled the fried catfish which was good. The 2 chicken dishes were only ok but the stuffed shells were good as were the salads. We did not really like the desserts too gooey. But maybe that's just the southern style.
