So Yes at check in they did ask us to pull up the page for where the QR code is for Covid approval because the hotel does not have the ability to read the QR code and they need to type in the actual numbers. That was the only glitch in our amazing vacation. In fact this trip ranks up there with one of our all time best.
The Ocean view room in the tower was spectacular. The staff has been downsized due to Covid, but the people working now are the best of the best. Patrick was amazing at night in the Restaurant and was a joy to converse with. Kat was taking care of our small party group at SUperbowl and she had us all in stiches. Hayes helped us out everyday at the pool with drinks, food etc and we looked forward to seeing her. Tyler the Food and Beverage manager was amazing and stopped bye our table and walked around and talked to everyone and picked up etc as he went. It was quite clear the staff was so happy to be back to work. The facility was spotless. The beaches amazing and in general everyone we came across was happy to have vacationers back. If you can make the time and are able to do so within your covid travel rules, I would highly recommend this location and this spot. Not sure I will ever see Waikiki like this again so I am so happy that I did and that we stayed at the Moana Surfrider.

Room tip: Tower rooms are bigger and newer.

I have been wanting to stay here since the first timeI came to Hawaii in 2005. I remember seeing the beautiful southern style porch with rocking chairs that looked over the ocean. Just picturesque.

The check in experience was horrible. The website and email from the resort stated to have the Travel Hawaii government QR code and government issued ID. My cousin and I brought those things. Upon our arrival we found that the Surfrider had its own special policy that required not only the QR code, but to be shown the info on our private pages to include what was below the QR code. The front desk woman would not accept the documents we provided to the state showing our negative covid tests, nor the QR code. The front desk agent handed us the state of Hawaii phone number. Ignoring all questions we had, then repeating to call the phone number she provided for the state website assistance.

The front desk agent made me feel very unsafe. She denied our basic need for shelter. The desk agent belittled us by refusing any assistance except to provide a number. (We called the number an Viola, over an hour later finally got what the Moana required.)

I've received better service from Motel 6. I understand that covid is legit. I'm a front line healthcare worker (ER nurse). My cousin is also a healthcare worker (Pharmacist).

Positive things: The property is beautiful. Fantastic views of Waikiki. The beds are super comfortable with soft yet sturdy sheets. The room set up with fridge and coffee maker is nice. Needs a microwave though.

Overall, this is my first and LAST time staying here. It did not meet expectations. Nor does the price compare with the other water front hotels with similar amenities. Save some money and stay at the Outrigger next door.

We are AVID travelers, but the pandemic really has us grounded. My wife and I decided to spend one night here in town at the Moana/Surfrider. However, as we were driving to the hotel on Friday afternoon, we really decided that we wanted to make it TWO nights. The agent at check-in handled that request EFFORTLESSLY. Two points.
Platinum upgrade to a spectacular ocean-view room on the 20th floor. SPLENDID!
Everything clean, staff visibly cleaning everywhere ... so we had few concerns about our safety.
Mask protocol in place everywhere on property ... NOT SO MUCH in Waikiki at large, we were very irked by the lax enforcement by HPD. Chief Ballard and Mayor Blangiardi WILL be getting letters.
Our waiter for breakfast, a gentleman from Ireland was MORE than gracious and pleasant.
Everything in the room functioned as it should, save for the cabinet door OUTSIDE the cabinet where the refrigerator is. Very minor.
The shower strong with immediate hot water ... excellent. Toto washlet commodes. (Novel).
So, it was a fantastic, wonderful, enchanting stay. Would I change anything? Nothing major. We were a tad put off by the lack of valet parking, but really? Not a big deal. And, the resort charge is very cloying, but again, that is the NORM in Waikiki, and I went round and round last year with the General Manager of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel ... apparently the decision is corporate and not local. IMHO, just charge whatever rate is appropriate and do away with the "unbundling". If it's not optional, then why package it separately? We plan to do this again soon, and the Moana/Surfrider will be at the top of our list.

Room tip: Ocean view is always best

Stayed at 3 hotels during this visit. Spent our first 3 nights at Moana, very nice hotel. We had a partial /side ocean view room with a balcony and that was great. Parking and resort fee high but on par with the area. You have to park across the street though at the Sheraton, easy walk across the street. Room was clean and ac cold, bed comfortable. Acai bowls everyday is a great way to start it. Just be aware pool closes at 5pm while we were there in December 2020.

We have stayed at this hotel numerous times and it always leaves us fulfilled.

The staff is friendly, there is a dedicated Elite check-in line, and the rooms are modern. If you ever have a problem or request such as missed housekeeping or extra towels or a wakeup call, the front desk is always happy to assist. Every staff member seems genuinely pleased to be of service and after several nights in a stay it begins to feel like home, because of how welcoming everyone is.

The hotel is centrally located to enjoy, or to get to, anything you would want to enjoy. Want to stay in downtown Waikiki and enjoy the food, beach, and nightlife? You are literally in the heart of it! Want to rent a car and explore the island? Literally across the street are several rental car companies and there are dozens or private (e.g. Turo) locations nearby.

The little things you don't notice in a hotel until they aren't there -- are one of those perks here. Conveniently placed towel hooks? ✓ Modern elevators? ✓ Friendly staff members ✓ Well appointed rooms, suites, and washrooms? ✓

This property also has excellent elite recognition, even going above and beyond for repeat guests.

If you were only going to visit Oahu once, this is the place to stay. If you were to plan to come back in the future, this is again the only place to stay.

p.s. Walk down the beach to the Mai Tai Bar for a world famous and refreshing drink. :)

Room tip: Any room is centrally located on the beach, but water facing has the best views.
