When my family travels we tend to get a much nicer hotel than we need since we're rarely even in our room. The Hale Koa was perfect for our needs because the hotel was really nice, but also very affordable. The grounds are really beautiful and the entire staff was nice and helpful. I really appreciated the fact that there is an fairly large exchange store downstairs from which to buy gifts or other requirements without the usual Waikiki mark up in price. Try buying sunscreen anywhere else and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's just nice not to overpay on some things. My family also enjoyed the restaurants on site. The food was not too expensive and was pretty good. Try the breakfast buffet at least once at Koko Cafe'. It's pretty good and not too expensive at $14 or less.
If you're going to be staying over a Friday night you might want to request a room facing the Hilton side of the hotel. We had an ocean view room and were able to watch the beautiful sunsets every night and also had an amazing front row seat on our balcony for the Hilton's Friday night fireworks show. VERY COOL. This show brings tons of people to the beach to watch from every hotel within sight.
We were really glad the hotel was located next to the Hilton not only because of the fireworks, but also because of the shopping and other amenities. If there is something that the exchange doesn't have the Hilton has an ABC you can try. Also, there are quite a few restaurants there you can visit if you get bored of those at the Hale Koa. Be aware though that they are more expensive. The Hilton also has some neat animal exhibits located around the grounds that were fun for the kids to see. It's nice to have access to these things but still enjoy the Hale Koa room price.
One thing that we didn't enjoy too much was the extra walk to get to Waikiki from the Hale Koa. If you plan on spending a bunch of time on Waikiki but don't feel like walking miles each time, then you might want to look into the public bus system or the Waikiki Trolleys. We didn't mind the walk too much (it is a very beautiful area), but it did factor into our decision making on where we wanted to eat or shop.
One other thing, if you are the type of person that needs absolute quiet to sleep then talk to the hotel before you book your room so you can get one that is away from the nightly live music located at the beach side of the hotel. The music wasn't too bad and wasn't a nightly thing, but you can hear it in the room with the sliding door closed. Just remember, this is Waikiki.
We definitely would stay again at the Hale Koa in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms on the beach side facing the Hilton are louder on some nights due to live music being played below, but offer an amazing view of their Friday night fireworks display.

Had a great time visiting this year. Able to get a king bed by request. Our partial ocean view room looked out over the DeRussy park with a sliver of beach visible from the balcony. The grounds are very lush and well kept while the beach by the hotel is the best in Waikiki. This is still the best deal for military visitors to Oahu.

I have stayed at the Hale Koa 4 times in the last 6 years. I was even married there in the Maile Garden in 2008. I will have to say the hotel is looking worn. I still love the open lobby and the overall friendliness of the staff (especially housekeeping). A few of my favorite things about the hotel is location, the friendless of the staff, the Barefoot Bar, pools and the AWESOME MAI TAIs. Our most recent stay was in October 2011, we stayed for two weeks in the Maile Tower. The hotel itself needs to be renovated, meaning updated with new room furnishings, new mattresses (we tried both beds in our room and they were horrible)but they were clean which is a must for me. The Koko Cafe needs a good cleaning and some of the tables need to be replaced (some are damaged). There is a great breakfast buffet in the morning at Koko Cafe, so try to check it out.The location of the hotel is in Waikiki, within walking distance to Ala Mona Shopping Center, high-end shopping strip, tourists souvenir shopping in International Center (try not to pay the price they are asking many of them will barter), post office and a yummy pizza place called Round Table Pizza as well as other shopping (located in Hilton Hawaiian Village next store to the Hale Koa). As for restaurants on property there is the Koko Cafe - as mentioned above they have a great breakfast, but the dinner was not good and kind of pricey. Bibas is another restaurant which is okay in a pinch especially if you are tired and do not want to go out. I have not tried the Warriors Lounge, last time I was there several years ago they were renovating it. Then there is the Bare Foot Bar with nightly music and drinks, and they have the best Mai Tais!!!! So with all this said I would definitely recommend this hotel. It was clean, nicely located, a good price and did I mention the FANTASTIC MAi Tais.

First visit we stayed on the 11th floor deluxe ocean front corner facing the museum, this vist, same corner but the 12th floor.

Check in was a breeze, maybe 5 minutes tops and the staff friendly and helpful.

Room was super clean and kept that way all 4 nights.

As always we really enjoyed the grounds and the quiet compared to the rest of Honolulu.

Had a couple of great meals at Biba's. Had one unremarkable expensive breakfast at Happys. Enjoyed the great Mai Tais at the barefoot bar.

We just walked everywhere around town, the zoo, dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, a sunset cruise on the Na Hoku II, drinks and pu pu's at Dukes. We did take the free shuttle to Hilo Hatties that you can catch in front of the museum or the Hilton next door.

Did some shopping in the onsite PX, most prices were better than in town.

Everyone we ran into was friendly. Had a nice chat with the GM on the elevator one morning.

We will be back and we will recommend this place to anyone going to Honolulu.

Room Tip: Stay ocean front if you can, well worth the extra but book early, the sell out fast.

We were here for 5 nts before heading to Bellows for 5 nts. It is in a great location; right on the beach, short walk to great restaurants and shopping. We opted for a garden view room, but it still came with a partial ocean view. The hotel was nice, quiet, and had lots of ameneties. The rooms were big enough and the beds were fine. Like another viewer stated, we were not expecting the Ritz, so it actually exceeded our expectations. Great view of Diamond Head from the beach, nice pool, good on-site dining options, good Luau. We only did one guided trip, which was Pearl Harbor 1/2 day reserved when we got to the Hale Koa with there events planners. It was nice not to have to drive and our guide was grt.
