My parents and grandparents are retired military and we've been staying at the Hale Koa since it opened back in the 70's. We have always enjoyed the hotel and the deluxe rooms at a reasonable price. I highly recommend the Breakfast buffet -- only $13.95 foe adults and $9.95 for seniors. In addition to the usual breakfast fare, they have made-to-order omelettes, make-your-own waffles, and a large selection of tropical fresh fruit. Coffee and juice is included and you can't beat the view. Get a table on the outside patio for the best view. After eating this buffet, you can skip lunch!

The lobby provides a great place for people watching with plenty of seating. And don't forget to see the Museum at the Diamond Head end of the property. It's free and provides a great history of the military in Hawaii.

Overall, I highly recomment the Hale Koa for military-affiliated families!

Room Tip: The rooms in the new tower are slightly bigger!

Location, location, location. This resort is right on the beach, and kept clean and safe. We had an ocean view room, which had a balcony with two chair and a table so we could enjoy the view. The room itself was nice, but not the nicest I had ever been in. Decent size, two queen beds, 20" (est.) TV, lots of counter space in the bathroom, plenty of dresser and closet space for 2 people. Overall, a good, clean, solid room.

There were 3 restaurants on site- Bibas (the nicest and most costly, opens to the banyan tree at the center of the resort, Koko's (mid-level, solid fare at low prices, outside seating has an ocean view), and Happy's (fast food, salads, pastries, deserts to go, and picnic fare). There were also snacks available at the bars. Overall the food was an excellent value.

The only entertainment we went to was the Luau. We really enjoyed it, although I had to have them change our table since the way the other couples had seated themselves left my husband and I not seated together. Once I got over my irritation with that situation, it was fun.

We did make use of the beach equipment rental shacks that offer chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, surf boards, lessons and more. I appreciated the convenience.

We rented a car for 3 days, and you have to cross the street to get to the parking garage, but that wasn't a big deal to us.

Our only complaint was that the Hilton next door set off fireworks on 3 seperate occasions during our 2+ weeks at the Hale Koa and my husband has PTSD and hit the deck each time. Warning us on nights that this was going to happen would have been nice.

We took advantage of the post-deployment discount and truly enjoyed our stay. In Waikiki you can pay a lot more for significantly less. The Hale Koa is not quite as shiny and fancy as say, the Hilton, next door, but the bonus is that you get to enjoy the fancy shopping and slick bars in the evening without the major hotel price tag - or - you can stay and enjoy all of the reasonably priced entertainments at the hotel. The Hale Koa has amazing real estate on the beach and absolutely will maximize your bang for vacation bucks.
The barefoot bar was a favorite afternoon spot to relax with a drink on the beach, and also enjoyed the morning fitness classes. I also appreciated that there was an 'adult only' pool. The shoppette has most of what you could need or want in the way of beach, snack and souvenir.
We will definitely visit again.

It had restaurants-Biba's was the best-Coco's was great to have breakfast. Sunday brunch was not good and neither was Happy's close to pool and bar. They had an adult pool and hot tub which was great. Had a separate baby pool and a family pool which was really big and beautiful. Had a store for gifts, food and liquior. It had a bar by the beach and also one inside by Coco's. They had nightly entertainment. They also had picnic tables and grills for grilling and most of all had 2 places for smoking. That is a hard thing to find in Hawaii.

For an Military Resort I am used to a bit more than only "30% off" on selected services.. we had to pay for both rooms (ours and the kids) no breakfast buffett what so ever, no RR Specials or Hotel/Family specials excep the Luau and a few things everything else has to be booked throug the travel agency attached to the hotel..(is convinient how ever)..and payed $40/week Internet was not even wireless and we only could hook up one computer.
The location is great if you like the be in the smack middle of the city life, next to the Hilton Village (what is extreemly charming) the Balconies are very suicidal friendly especially at the upper floors, no privacy on the balconies what so ever...other than that, great hotel, great location right at the beach...
