Owner description: In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

The Mansions are truly awe inspiring. For best value buy the 5 house package and be prepared to walk a lot. The main four houses are self guided audio tours and you can spend as much time as you like soaking in the atmosphere and wonders of the homes and grounds. Personnel were friendly and helpful. My only complaint would be that the guided tour at Chateau Sur Mer was too brief. There were nine people in our group and we were all ushered from one room to the next before we all had a chance to get a decent look into the rooms that were viewable but roped off.

These were built as homes - not museums. Make the effort to remember that as you tour. I overheard another visitor say she could never live in a place like The Elms or The Breakers. Well I'm pretty sure I could.

It is hard to believe that these mansions were summer homes. The architecture is amazing!
