Unusual place out in the Arizona desert that used to be a horse farm and arena. Now it is a full service restaurant with a western horsey atmosphere. Their specialty is steaks cooked on a grill in the middle of the big dining hall. Not a fancy place but the food is good and average priced.

Three of us drove 22 miles to eat at this steak house and were greatly disappointed at the quality of the food, the time it took to prepare the food and the slow service. The restaurant was not busy when we were there. It definitely was not worth the effort to get there.

Stopped here as it was the only place in the area as I was passing through on a Friday night. The locals told me that is the only reason any of them go there. The positive: low key local bar diner like atmosphere, really wonderful local customers, very clean restrooms (which are in a different building which may be important if mobility is an issue for you). The food, beer and the service is awful. My T bone was not even close to a quarter of an inch thick. It had thick gristle (not marbling) throughout and no flavor except one section that tasted like liquid smoke had been dumped on it. The salad was white chunks of iceberg lettuce with one unripe cherry tomatoe and carrot pieces. The beer was warm and completely flat. All of the server's scowled all of the time and slammed drinks dismissively at customers without speaking. Really ashame since these nice folks are there neighbors. It was around 8, the kitchen was to be opened until 10. I was told I needed to order as the cook was closing the kitchen early. There were still plenty of people there, but of course, per their advice, they were not eating.

We invited friends to join us at Fred's for a steak dinner. They had never been and followed us out there. They were sure we were lost. The dirt road is rough and the parking lot is dark, but its great inside, if you like a "good ol' boys" kind of atmosphere (which we do). We sat next to the crank-up grill and watched the steaks being perfectly cooked. Nothing fancy here. It was a cowboy roping arena before it was a restaurant. Just good food, good sing-along and dance music (on Saturday night when we were there), a reasonable prices. When is the last time you had a plate-sized T-bone for $18?

Outside the bar (perfectly safe for kids) is a rodeo ground with carved wooden statures, horses, western wagons of all kinds, really neat stuff to look at. You can eat outside as well. Inside, is outdated booth and tables to sit at. New upholstery would be nice. Very western decor (including dead carcasses of desert animals.) You might see a real cowboy or two in chaps stroll in. Waitresses work hard and are friendly. I've had good and really good burgers here. Get them to cook it on the i open flame grill...even better. Usually after 5 pm. The taco salad is really good and big enough to split. They offer steak meals, kids meals and a variety of other foods. Not a lot of healthy choices other than salads. Its Western all the way! Out in the middle of nowhere so its a fun experience if you get out this far west of Tucson. Stop in on your way back from Kitt Peak (a must see too!)
