I went to school at the University of Arizona for my undergraduate degree and fell in love with Tucson on my first trip to the U of A. When I get the chance to take my husband back to Tucson, he always wants to stay at the El Conquistador. He loves the location and the feel of the property. I do love being close to the mountains and the desert landscaping.
For our trip this December, I was able to ask for a complimentary Diamond member upgrade in advance of our stay when I received a pre-check in text asking about our arrival time. We were upgraded from a standard room to a casita on the property, which was right by one of the pools. The casita was lovely. Some of the furnishings and electronics are starting to show their age, but my husband and I don't really care about those sorts of details. The casita also could only be heated (and not cooled), but since there was a ceiling fan in the bedroom we were fine simply leaving the heater off and using the fan at night.
We did try to use the hot tub by our casita during our stay: we were excited to be a few steps away from a soak under the stars at night. We did try to use the hot tub by our casita during our stay: we were excited to be a few steps away from a soak under the stars at night. But for whatever reason (I am guessing COVID capacity issues) the hot tub was not being heated, so after dipping our toes into some icy water, we retreated back to our room.
The property allows pets, which we appreciate as we often travel with our dogs.
On previous stays I have really enjoyed sitting by one of the main pools on the property and reading a book while I am brought beers poolside. The weather during this trip was a little too cool for poolside reading, so I am not sure if those amenities are still available under current COVID restrictions.
Also, as another recent reviewer mentioned, when we called for a late checkout they were surprisingly strict about "what they could offer us". We were only looking for an hour extension, so it wasn't a problem, but I was surprised about this tone given the property is largely empty due to COVID greatly reducing holiday travel traffic.
We always go into town to eat, so I can't offer an opinion on any food available at the property. I did like their updated handouts with details about who would deliver to the property: the availability was better than I expected as the hotel's location is a little remote.
Overall, we would definitely return again to the property and we appreciate everything everyone did to make our stay an enjoyable one.More
