“Beware of deceptive signage”
Review of Clay Cliff

Clay Cliff
Ranked #2 of 9 things to do in Omarama
Certificate of Excellence
Type: Other
Attraction details
Reviewed 6 January 2018

Please note that my rating is not based on the quality of the Clay Cliffs themselves, but on the deceptive signage that lures tourists to the site:
The Clay Cliffs sign on the main road has all the markings of an official site sign (white letters/brown background). It does NOT state the distance to the cliffs, nor that a fee is levied for entering the site.
Only after driving several kilometers you will arrive at a gate, where the terms and conditions are finally revealed ...
I consider this deceptive labeling :-(

With hand painted signs and a $5 entry fee per vehicle to drive down a private road, I wasn't really sure what to expect with this (as I didn't research it beforehand). It is certainly worth checking out! The cliffs are very cool to explore and a nice backdrop for photos. I'd say worth the stop.

This is a good little outing to see unique clay formations. $5 per car and we enjoyed a stretch break. Best to wear closed toed shoes.

The cliffs are spectacular and are only a relatively short drive from Omarama. It is signposted from the main road and is well worth the trip. Part of the route is along a gravel road but that is a fairly straight, is of a reasonable width and has a smooth surface.

A nominal entrance fee is charged via an honesty box and is considered justifiable as the gravel road is mostly on private land and any maintenance would be the owners' responsibility.

I get easily excited about lots of different things. Yet this place was a complete waste of time. The clifs are bland and done in 10 seconds. Unsealed road over private land. Cost of 5$ .... 80 cars/ day ... 130’000$/year for a 1km unseald rode to a underwhelming sight: well promoted indeed!!
