It's well worth the signposted diversion off the main road and a short walk to see the rocky pinnacles which tower above you when you get close. Awesome atmosphere when you go through the gap into the cathedral like space beyond. More amazing nz geology!!
The path is loose in places and gets steeper the further you go so wear good walking shoes.

This place was quite amazing as we had no idea what to expect. I would highly recommend as place to be enthralled and great photographs to be had. Although it bucketed down as we were three quarters of the way up the track, one of our group did go all the way to the end and was delighted to have done so.

I had driven past the sign to ClayCliffs before and with a little time on hand decided to explore. The diversion off the Queenstown road near Omarama passes over private farmland and the owner of the site charges a small admittance fee ($5 per car)which is left in a box on trust. About 10 minutes along the track you will arrive at an amazing site created by the erosion of geologically recent sedimentary deposits by water into a bizarre badlands landscape rising steeply from the flat flood plains. You can walk in among the fluted spines marvelling at the arid and totally surprising work of nature. In late afternoon the colours and shadows make it a photographers dream.

If you're heading to Mt Cook from Omerama you need to add an hour to your itinerary to stop off on the way to visit these stunning cliffs. They are 10k off the main highway ( 5 k on gravel roads) and on private land. The $5 entry fee may be the best value for anything in New Zealand. Hike the short half mile trail through the cliffs to get absolutely stunning views and pictures.

This place is about 10k outside Omarama. There is a donation box at the gate for your $5 donation to drive across private property to see a rather amazing sight. Wear your sturdy shoes as the 100+ meter walk to the viewing area from the car park is uneven and has smaller rocks that may roll under your feet. This is so worth the short drive from town to see it. A sunny day, especially in the early morning, affords the best views.
