We stayed at the Riviera as a couple but it's a great place to come with a few friends because the rooms can accomadate 5 to 7 people because they are very spacious and have 2 to 3 beds. The rooms also have large balconies with a great view of the town, river and ocean. There's a nice roof top terrace to relax and have a drink and a minifridge in the room.

The staff on site don't speak much english but with their basic english and our basic spanish we always managed also the owners live in Montanita and speak english so if ever there's a problem they can always come over and help. For example, we had a problem at check out to pay the balance because the atm s had to be refilled with money and we didn't want to pay with credit card because the bank on the other end charges an extra tax, so we were able to deal with the owner to make a direct deposit in the hotels account. Thankfully he was able to arrange that for us because we had to catch a bus to Guayaquil and couldn't wait for the bank to get more money (this often happens in Montanita and usually is fixed within 24 hours but it's unpredictable).

Riviera is situated off to the side of Montanita but still close enough to the middle of town that you will hear the music from the clubs at night and people in the streets and although we traveled during low season, it's party night pretty much every night which is a lot of fun when you want to stay out but it could be annoying for famillies with younger children or older couples. If you think the noise of the nightlife might bother you but still want to visit this town, i would suggest renting on the outskirts of town, for example San Jose.

Overall we had a good experience

Room Tip: Ask to lower the price on weekdays if you are staying for a whole week including the weekend

We (2girls & 1 boy) visited Montanita twice on our trip to ecuador. once from Dec 19-23 and from Dec 26-Jan 1. We booked two hotels for our dates. We figured the first leg we'll stay in town and the second leg we'll stay on the beach.

For us the issue with the beach hotel (Hostal Kundalini) was having to walk on the sand or on the highway every time you want to go into town. After a few days it just becomes a bit of a hassle. Also only has wi-fi by reception or common area, not in the rooms. Rate was only 30 dollars less than Riviera so we were a bit disappointed.

Riviera is the Gem in Montanita. You are far enough to not hear the music pumping at 3am if you're looking to sleep in but close enough to change your mind and be part of the party within 5 minutes. It's in walking distance to all the restaurants and nightclubs. There's also a row of fruit stands right at the entrance that make the best juices and breakfast!

As far as accommodations the rooms were perfect. Had three big comfortable beds, Air conditioner, TV with cable, Wi-fi and best of all HOT shower. We really had no complaints...the staff was even amazing! Richard and Mariana from the front desk answered allll of our questions and Richard even took us to a great surf town about 30 minutes away...It's called Ayampe, for you surfers.

Montanita is a small town with few options outside of hostels. So can't expect 5 stars accommodations but this is the best place in that town by far!

Our room had a nice view and it was big. The walls were in need of a painting. They were missing the stove and the balcony furniture so we took the couch/fold up bed that worked nicely. The bed was large & comfortable. We felt it was over priced even at high season. We did have breakfast included. The breakfast included eggs without any herbs or onions or salsa. The manager of the restaurant, Theo was very helpful & hospitable & asked us for feed back about the breakfast. We were engaged in interesting conversation so we forgot to give him our constructive feed back for our tastes. We also had some mini looking wiener type meat on the plate. Since we do not eat this type of meat we can not comment. We prefer brown tst over white and the toast & jam were tasty. Since I have cooked at many restaurants over the years, I can say the breakfast was bland. The ambiance was incredible on the roof top and as I said, we enjoyed rich conversation with Theo who gave us helpful information. The juice, tea & coffee were great and I would have liked the option of fresh fruit since it is so readily available. The young man at registration, Richard who was from Columbia was very helpful, friendly & accommodating. We would go back on low season. Although our sleep was comfortable I would recommend ear plugs as the city does not sleep. We enjoyed the Markets, beach walks & great vegetarian pizza at a new restaurant on a corner end street close to the bridge. It is a big restaurant cement structure with lots of beautiful, lights inside and a Hostal upstairs. The waiters & waitresses were very friendly & accommodating.

Room Tip: If you are young & like to party there are plenty of rooms to choose from. There was another hotel that was full, which looked more elegant & cost was a better value, we do not remember the name. Depends what you want to spend.

This hotel is the best you can get for $60, beds are comfortable, the room is nice and clean, you have a great view, and service is great. At first we had a problem with our booked room, it had a leak in the bathroom, but the manager solved the problem immediately and gave us another room. Wifi worked perfectly well, so as satellite TV.
I've had bad experiences with this hotel but it seems that things are changing, you can tell that the new manager is making a really good effort to improve service quality.

Had a terrible stay here at Riviera Pacific Suites. For what we got we could have paid $20 per night instead of $80. The Hot water did not work for 2 days out of the 4 days we were there, the WiFi did not work, the stove did not work, there was no breakfast available as advertised, and the toilet did not work. Every day we went to complain about these things to the front desk and they honestly couldn't have cared less. I've been all around Ecuador and I realize that in small towns like this it's a luxury having things like WiFi, hot water, and a proper kitchen. But in reality if you don't have these things then why are you paying $60 per night more than the surrounding hostels???? Honestly I wish I had stayed somwhere else.

Room Tip: The room we stayed at on the top floor we could here all the loud buses on the street making sleep difficult.
