I could say that the journey from B.C. was worth it for this museum alone ( a little exaggeration, but !! ). We had been to the mine tour in Newfoundland at Belle Isle and this was better because of the museum, the miner's houses, and the wealth of information. Our underground tour guide was a retired miner and was able to give us first hand experiences about how "it really was" to be down in the deep. The tour went into lower and lower roof level galleries and I was really glad that I was not a claustrophobic person. There was so much information to absorb and I hope to come back some day and do this again. Quite an amazing experience .....

This was extremely interesting, been there several times, great place for visitors and a wealth of knowledge on how coal was mined then and now, what dangers they had to work under.

Glace Bay is a hardscrabble mining town not far from Sydney, NS. Not much to bring tourists except in 1967 the Miners Museum was created. Here you'll find the stories, equipment, and shockingly brutal history of mining in Cape Breton.

But the highlight is a tour underground into a purpose-built mine, led by an actual retired miner. We were guided by Sheldon, who entertained with facts and anecdotes in the way only a true Cape Bretoner can. You'll be shocked at what these men went through to put food on the table.

Plenty of hands-on exhibits and audiovisual presentations as well.
This is an important part of Canada's history that everyone should experience. There's also replica "company houses" where you can see how the miners lived.

And plan on eating at the restaurant, which is in one of the company houses. Excellent food!

All in all an important part of your Cape Breton vacation, especially if the weather turns against you.

Dear Chris L,

Thank you for sharing your review with TripAdvisor's readers. We are very proud of our history and are thrilled when a visitor appreciates our story.

Sheldon is a wonderful guide and an absolute asset to the Museum. I will be sure to let him know that you enjoyed your time with him in the mine.

I have to agree with you that on a rainy day in Cape Breton there is no better place to be than at the Miners Museum.

Safe travels,

Mary Pat

Our drive to Glace Bay from Port Hawkesbury was a great scenic adventure to start our day at The Miners' Museum. This museum is well worth the 3 hours we spent. The mine tour was guided by "Abbie", a former miner with 30-some years in the mine and 25 years as a guide here. He was a fountain of knowledge, and truly enjoyed sharing his personal stories along with the workings of the mine, and Glace Bay mining history.
A visit to exhibits, The Company Store and The Miners' Homes was very insightful, with excellent guides.
Do take the time to visit and learn!
