Review of Step House

We almost skipped this 1 mile round trip trail to Step House but decided that while we were visiting Wetherill Mesa we would do this. I am so glad we did, the trail is pretty easy, a little stone stepping to get to it and a little steep on the way back up. This is a self guided tour with a brochure explaining some of the marked interest points. At the pueblo itself there were two rangers who were very helpful giving us additional information, one of them being an archeologist. They showed us some garbage left over from the anasazi in addition to some pottery shards on the floor of the pueblo that we would have otherwise missed. Great short trail!

This was a great short walk to a cliff dwelling. There was a Park Ranger there to answer questions but it was nice to get to it on our own.

This site is on the Weatherill Mesa loop road which you take near the Far View area. There is a parking lot where all motorised vehicles must park and near here is a small cafe and a stand from where the rangers take the guided tours from. You can only hike from this area. The Long house guided tour is a 2 hour tour and 4kms, which we didnt have time for and we were told this site is not as well preserved as others so we just did the short hike to the Step House which is self guided. It is 1 mile (1.6km) but is a 1 hour loop road with a steep descent and ascent of 100feet or 30metres. The ranger is waiting at the site to explain it all to you. We really found this site the BEST as there are 2 villages and 4 pithouses all from different time periods. If you hgave average fitness you will easily do it. MUST see!

We loved the short hike to Step House in Wetherill Mesa. This is a free, self-guided tour. There is a hike to get to Step House, along a mostly paved path. We did not have time for the Long House tour, so we opted to do this hike and tour Step House on our own. There were guide books at the beginning of the trail. I actually liked Wetherill Mesa better than the more-commonly traveled areas by Cliff Palace. It was peaceful, with rolling hills and even wild horses running around. At the beginning of the trailhead, there was an outdoor snack and gift shop area with covered picnic tables and a place to fill up water bottles. The bathrooms were nice, flush toilets, which was a pleasant surprise.

The hike down to Step House takes you along a beautiful mesa. The house itself is small, but you can climb ladders and check out the Kivas and other areas. Although this is a "self-guided" tour, there was a Ranger on site to answer questions, which was also a great surprise. The hike back to the trailhead was shorter than the hike down. We went at the end of our day, and it was extremely hot and dry. Although we were drinking a lot of water, I did feel exhausted from the heat for several hours after we left.

You can go down without a ticket. It is a relatively short walk compared to the ticketed tours. We were able. To walk down and see it in about 30 minutes. Be ready for the uphill hike out! Enjoy!
