“Hip part of Atlanta”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 November 2011

Virginia Highlands has the reputation of being the more “Hipster” part of town (however not quite as “Hip” as little five points). It is a small part of town consisting of a bunch of cool restaurants, bars, and shops. I am from Atlanta and I go here frequently for the bars and food. The night life here is mostly young professionals and college students but they mesh well and form a good younger crowd. Notable bars are Moes & Joes (all college kids, 3.50$ pbr pitchers), Noche (younger professional), Hand in Hand, Neighbors, Dark Horse, and Fontaine’s. They are all pretty much in walking distance of each other.

It is also good to go here during the day to catch lunch. Pretty good places to grab a bite to eat include Hand in Hand, DBA BBQ, Food 101, and Taco Mac. By no means are these places fine dining but good cheap local staples.

The Highlands are also pretty close to Piedmont Park and Little 5 Points (Little 5) which are other fun places in Atlanta.

“So far the coolest part of Atlanta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2011

This neighborhood reminds me of Portland, OR. It's a couple of clusters of cool dive bars, restaurants, and boutique shops. The scene is very casual but not trashy. If you have your fill of the bars around the intersection of Virginia and Highland walk a few blocks up Highland for a different batch. I'm visiting and was happy to run into a few friendly locals at Moe's and Joe's. Also cool are the Fontaine Oyster Bar and the Cavern. Both thumbs way up.

“Nice area of Atlanta to explore”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2006

I recently got to visit Atlanta after a 5 year hiatus. It felt so good to be back! I love Atlanta. You get the best of a small southern town atmosphere with high tech companies and artistic culture from all the art schools in the area.

The Highlands is still an awesome place to explore. Just drive around and you will find neat stores, places to eat, and a neat jogging trail full of people walking their dogs and rollerblading.

About 5 to seven years ago, everyone wanted to live in Buckhead. Unfortunately, my friends said that Buckhead has problems so they live elsewhere and spend most of their time in the Highlands and Midtown. I recommend visiting the Dark Horse Tavern and bar hopping from there if you are new to town or are visiting.

“Human scale neighbourhood in a large city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2004

Great neighbourhood with pavements, people actually walking in the street with their family or dog, greeting you when you walk past. It felt very safe to us which are not from the US. The shops are greats and there are many good restaurants. Just go to a bar, get chatting and you will get recommendations aplenty.
We ate at a tapas bar called Noche on Virgina Road - great tapas and good cocktail list (fab margaritas). Eat at the bar to chat to the local people.
If Thai is your thing Mali's on Amsterdam is great.
The best meal we had was at Murphy's - Italian restaurant with a varied wine list and exquisite food. Probably the best we had during a 3 week stay in the South.
