We stayed at the Berkeley this weekend for a short weekend getaway in Richmond. We arrived after an epic drive from DC and were not pleased with our difficulty in checking in. First of all, they attempted to charge me $60 more a night than the rate I had booked. When I looked at the check-in contract, I advised them that the rate was incorrect and they realized the mistake and changed it. We were given our room keys and trudged up to our room only to find that it was not clean (the housekeeper was about to start cleaning it). We then went back downstairs, received a different room assignment, and trekked back upstairs. The room itself was nice, spacious, and very clean. The bed was comfortable and the room had a nice flat screen TV. We didn't like that our room faced a brick wall, but I guess someone has to be in that room! There are a ton of little restaurants nearby. We drove a few blocks past the hotel and found a parking garage on the lefthand side with parking for $5 a day (we parked at 3pm on Saturday and left at 10am on Sunday and paid $5). Apparently that is the rate all day every day, so don't waste your money on valet! If we were to return to Richmond, we would likely stay at the Berkeley, but would request a room with a better view.

Room Tip: Request a room NOT facing the brick wall!

The Berkeley lived up to it's 4 stars with extremely nice furnishings and staff. Would recommend, however, I was there over a weekend and it is in the heart of the business area....very quiet as the people who work during the week are not around

Right at the edge between the business district and The renovated Shockoe Slip district and 2 blocks from the capital, this was a great location for a one night stop. It also seems to cater to business travelers. the place is small and elegant with a lot of dark wood panelling. there is a pleasant looking restaurant on the first floor with traditional food but we went for one of the many nearby places for both lunch and dinner. our room had two very comfortable beds piled high with pillows. a large table that would make a good desk that we used for breakfast. 2 comfy chairs, a wardrobe with iron and lockbox. big flat screen tv, wireless. N ice large bath with roomy counters, granite tiling. We opted for the valet parking $20 because we had a packed car and it was secure and the service was good but we could have parked nearby for much less. i saw it on one of the discount travel sites for $119 but called the hotel and was quoted $130. when i called back they said $150 but were pleasant about doing the $130 price.

Lovely European-style hotel. Beautifully appointed room, squeaky clean with a soft, lush bed. Quiet and nice. A great stop on a driving trip, because it's just off 95 downtown in a great area for walking with many restaurants nearby. Not sold on the $20+ valet parking with a 15 minute wait to retrieve the car, but after we turned it down the front desk clerk told us street parking was free and we found a spot right across the street. We didn't eat in the restaurant because on that Sunday night there were only two people there--a little too quiet. But will try next time. Staff of two, front desk and bellman, seemed less than enthusiastic but the morning front desk person was very nice. Definitely would go again. Price is unbelievable for the quality of the facility. $135 King.

We recently stayed here for one night. What a treat it was. The hotel is beautiful and well presented, staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms are amazing. The bathroom was just as big with a huge roll top bath. We also had a cute separate sitting room with a tv . Staff here were very professional and friendly. The setting is really picturesque. The children's menu is very good and very reasonable and children are fussed over and made to feel very welcome which delighted our son. Although this hotel is on the expensive side it is so worth the money. We had such a lovely stay and it out the smiles back on our faces. Very romantic and family friendly. I'm saving my pennies for a return visit. The best hotel we have stayed in.. Thank you to the staff!!!!
