Around the perimeter of the building are many statues and fountains. The area is clean and well maintained. Illinois is more than just Lincoln so it was nice to see other people honored. On the backside is police and firefighter monuments.

Definitely not a lengthy visit. Tour allows you on to first and second floors to tour offices, senate, Supreme Court, and house. Nice free option to do in conjunction with Lincoln Museum.

We were following one of the routes of Route 66 and came to a stop sign right in front of the State Capital Building. It was a Sunday late afternoon and there were few people around, so we parked and walked around the grounds, checking out the statues, fountains, and monuments. The building itself is very photogenic with it's silver dome. I took pictures all around the building grounds. It's worth a quick stop and see if you are remotely interested in architecture.

The Illinois capitol is one of the most impressive for exterior and interior both. The art and the decorations are impressive.
You should take a guided tour. The tour guides are very nice.

We did not do a tour. They were closed due to our bad timing. The whole world was shut down but they did allow walk throughs of the first floor and we met Joel who, a guide there, told us so much history and showed us around as much as we could see. He was wonderful! Thank you Joel!
