We decided to come a day early to Anchorage so we could relax for a day before we boarded the Celebrity train to Seward to then board our cruise ship. We booked the Hilton because of it's proximity to the Celebrity check-in location the Egan Centre. To say that this Hotel has a good location is an understatement. It is in the middle of everything downtown. The Egan centre is one block away but as you will learn the blocks in Anchorage are tiny... it seems like under a 100m per block in my opinion. The Hotel itself is older in style and clearly in need of a reno. The wall paper is buckling in places, my wife felt that the floors were not clean enough (I didn't care) and the general feel was that it was older. On the positive side, the mattress was firm but not too much so, as were the pillows so I got a great night sleep. Water pressure was excellent and the hot water was refreshing and consistent. The flatscreen TV (40") in the room was free standing but included several HBO stations. WiFi is free and bandwidth is good, make sure you ask for the password when you checkin and also make sure you are Hilton Honors member or you may be charged for WiFi.
The location of the Hotel is at the North end of downtown, looking to the northeast you can see the mountains clearly and to the north you can see the water. If you walk a few blocks south, east and/or west you can pretty much find anything. We got a recommendation of trying the reindeer hotdogs from a local Celebrity tour person and I must admit the $6.00 USD for the hotdog was almost worth it, delicious!! Go to the vendor at the SW corner of 4th and E street (the only vendor that is $6.00, the rest are $6.50) and apparently (according to the Celebrity girl) they are the best. When you walk around you will see many gift shops, a JC Penny, restaurants and local attractions. It is very tourist focused in this area. The hotel could not be better located.
We decided to relax and just have breakfast in the hotel. It's not cheap ($19 USD) for the buffet but it is great. The selection isn't huge but it is comprehensive with your standard continental breakfast pastries, cereals, cold meats and cheeses, cottage cheese, yogurts, fruits. The rest includes eggs, bacon, sausages, home fries, biscuits and gravy, grits (well done), steal cut oatmeal, and a full omelette bar where they will cook pancakes and all sorts of eggs for you as well. Juices (Orange, Cranberry, Grapefruit and Prune) and coffee are included in the price. Service in the restaurant was excellent, perfectly attentive but not intrusive. There is no tax on the breakfast so, even though it is expensive, it was worth it in my opinion (btw, go a bit early (6:45am)... we did and noticed that it got crowded as we were leaving).
Service overall in the hotel was excellent, people are friendly and professional, truly concerned about being hospitable to their guests. They should all be commended.
One note about transportation from the airport. If you google the bus route to the hotel, you will notice that it is a short walk to the bus stop at the airport then about a 5 block walk to the hotel from where you get dropped off at the People Mover transit hub downtown. Since the cost of Uber was about $20 and the cost of taxi's much higher we decided to try public transit just to see what it was like. For $2 each it was worth it. The blocks are so short, the bus almost empty, and the walk was minimal even with our luggage and to be honest, after the flight, I wanted to walk :) Just something to consider.
