Kona Sugar Shack
Reviewed 16 August 2017

Thank you J and John! We love Kona Sugar Shack (KSS). We stayed at
Kona Sugar Shack (KSS) a few years back and had a wonderful time. This year, we decided to revisit on a family vacation with our son and daughter-in-law. We have found that Hawaii (the Big Island) is not as crowded in May as at other seasons. We went to many beaches and had no trouble finding relatively secluded places to sunbathe, swim and snorkel. Best of all if we wanted to hang closer to home some days, there was an incredible cove in which to snorkel right out in front of KSS and another down the road. Also, we could choose to enjoy the pool, lounge around and sunbathe, or lie under the umbrellas and read. We were surprised that the KSS is even quieter now that the parking area across the street has been closed since it borders a traditional religious site. KSS is big enough to host a family reunion in one place and yet spacious enough that individuals still feel they have some space of their own... 4 kitchens, many living rooms and an incredible lanai with a huge dinner table to enjoy dinner while watching the sunset (watch for the green flash). We went out to the numerous restaurants close by, but our favorite thing to do was to cook in the huge kitchen or use the grill on the pool patio to cook up some steaks or banana leaf fish (with banana leafs right on the property, all with fresh fish, vegetables, and tropical fruit from the fresh produce stalls in the market just down the street. We left with stories of Manta Rays, eels, dolphins, turtles, and fun. Great times with family and friends around great food and drink! We are looking forward to our next trip to Kona Sugar Shack and hope we will be able to bring along even more family and friends. I suggest at least 10 days to have enough time to enjoy the full benefits of a vacation on the Big Island.

Just got back from my 5th or 6th stay at the KSS. The location, right across from Magic Sands Beach and a half-mile from Kahaluu Beach park is great. coming home, a quick rinse in the outdoor shower and a relaxing dip in the pool - it is no ka oi. Since they closed the beach parking lot across the street and cleared away the shrubbery above the water, the view of the ocean is so much better. I love how the condos are so well appointed and equipped with everything you need. The provision of beach chairs, umbrellas, ice chests, floaties and noodles for the pool is such a great plus. Jae and John (the owners) are the nicest people you'll ever meet. Can't wait to go back. January, I hope??

Room Tip: All are good. Lanai in the anniversary suite has the best views

I received your check for $1,000 for my security deposit in this morning's mail.

We all enjoyed staying at the Sugar Shack. Alice's family arrived there first, and had time to see the house. When we got there, the grandkids had so much fun giving us a tour of all the suites and views. Since we had the whole house, there was plenty of room for each family to have their own private space. We also appreciated the beautiful furnishings and how well kept-up everything was. We loved the pool, and spent many leisurely mornings sitting beside it, just enjoying the view.

I was in the Honeymoon Suite, and really appreciated the grab bars in the shower!

We had such fun exploring Kona and the area, and it was really a memorable trip for our family, many of whom had never been there before. Thank you so much for providing such a beautiful house for our visit.

With lovely memories of Hawaii, Mahalo Anne

I recently stayed at the KONA Sugar Shack and what a fantastic place! Beautiful, lovely landscaping and pool, perfect spot to see the nightly sunsets. The Sugar Shack is fully equipped with boogy boards, snorkel equipment, beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels and coolers. It makes it very convenient to pack a lunch and head off to the beach for the day. There is a grill by the pool which we used most nights and enjoyed our dinners outside as the sun set. Very reasonably priced, full kitchens, comfortable beds and nice linens. I can not wait your go back and stay at the Kona Sugar Shack.

My husband and I stayed at the Sugar Shack for a week, and I have only good things to say about our stay. Every night, we cozied up on the patio for amazing views of the sunset over the ocean. We went to various beautiful beaches recommended by John and Jae, including the one right across the street. And when we just wanted to be away from it all, we relaxed by the pool on the property. Can't wait to return!
