Kona Seaspray
Reviewed 21 January 2011

We stayed at the Kona Seaspray in unit #302 January 4th to the 11th. It was my girlfriend and our three kids 16, 14, and 11 y/o. Our flight arrived over an hour early which put us on the island just after 10 am. So we got our car and drove to the Seaspray knowing the check in was 2 P.M. I thought we would see if we could at least drop of our luggage and change until we were able to ccheck in. When I arrived, I had some trouble finding the manager Bob but he walked up to the condo with me and checked to make sure it had been cleaned and let us in early. It was nice to get out of our pants and into some shorts. The room was nice and the view was great. You just have to see past the power lines. It's a short walk to Kahalu'u beach and was a great place to teach the kids how to snorkel.
Now comes the not so good part. My girlfreind and I slept on the Queen bed in master bedroom. The two girls slept on the twin beds in the other room and the 16 y/o on the hide-a-bed in the living room. I say sleep, but that is misleading. The queen bed was like trying to sleep on a pool table. It was nothing short of miserable. After two nights of trying to sleep, our backs ached and our shoulders were very sore and stiff. We thought we would try the hide-a-bed and give the queen bed to the 16 y/o. The hide-a-bed was like sleeping on a roller coaster. There was also a bunch of street noise. Lots of 4 wheel drives and Harley's going by.
Our vacation with the kids was great, but the lack of sleep for us all did take it's toll. We were exhausted by the end of the week and couldn't wait to sleep in our own beds. We hated to leave Hawaii though so I would recommend at least staying in a differant condo at this location and hope the beds are better than we had. A friend of mine recommended this place to us, but she had stayed in unit #4 and was happy with it.

The view is nice, the space is fine, but the owner/manager offered no discount or percs for the unexpected noise and dirt from the heavy equipment that he hired to dig a new septic system. It started at 8:15 the morning after our arrival, and did not stop during the daytime for our entire week of vacation.

First, the good and likely great: Superb location, spacious, and terrific views.

Next, a disclaimer: The owner forewarned us... kinda'

Now, the not so good: Our Unit #3 was worn, threadbare, cluttered, and dirty... VERY dirty.

Before arriving, the owner informed us that work on installation of a new septic system would be in progress (much construction equipment, no activity whatsoever while we were there) and that renovation of our unit had been curtailed because of the EPA's insistence for this new system (somewhat colorfully, implying that environmental protection should not be a priority if one lives within 100 feet of one of Hawaii's great beaches). The unit we found had paintings on the floor, boxes stacked atop shelving and closets, large holes in the walls, and outdoor chaise lounges that were covered with filth. Linens were worn, but bed decent. We pointed out the fact that the deadbolt would not work because of the strike plate. "Gotta' fix that" responded the owner... and never did. We were without hot water x 16 hours ("Cloudy day and we have a solar system", making this perhaps the country's poorest engineered such system). When he turned on the hot water, it worked. Yes, the unit has a full kitchen. No, without tossing most of the utensils/dinnerware, and sterilizing the remainer, one should be highly skeptical (coffee pot had 2mm of scum). And there is no dishwasher. You expected hygiene?

But it was roomy, and the location perfect. Caveat Emptor.

My husband and I just spent the most beautiful Thanksgiving I think we've ever had at the Seaspray. We've stayed in other condo units around Kona, but this was by far the nicest one of all. We were in a ground floor unit in the "Reef' building and could see the ocean and bay from the living room. It was equipped with A/C, but we didn't need it as the weather was perfect and a cool breeze flowed down the mountain in the evening to cool things down. The manager invited all guests to a Thanksgiving Luau around the pool for a sunset dinner, with live entertainment and all kinds of food that was prepared by the owners and other guests. It was better than the luaus that we've paid to attend at the local resort hotels! This property is in such a great location, with it being so close to
Kahaluu Bay and Beach Park, and being able to hear the waves crashing on the rocks
just across the street was very nice. And the sunsets from the pool area were spectacular. Enjoyed our stay so much, we are already talkng about a return trip to The Seaspray next year!

I've vacationed in the Hawaiian Islands many times over the past 30 years, and I have found a real jewel at the Kona Seaspray on the Big Island. I stayed in the newly remodeled Unit Four where they thought of everything to make your time there relaxing and comfortable in a first class atmosphere. It's every bit as nice as anything you will find at the other much more expensive condos at other resort areas around the island, and this location is excellent. From the King Temperpedic bed to the screened-in dining area, living room and kitchen, all rooms open to the wonderful ocean view. The remodel included all new carpet and tile, travertine and granite throughout, and all cabinets are bamboo. The wooded vaulted ceilings and pocket doors able to open fully to the ocean gives you a feeling that you never want to leave. Then there's the huge flatscreen TV with cable plus WiFi. Bob was informative and very helpful in every way. There are other condos available for families, but for couples or singles, this is as good as it gets. It's close to any activities you would want to do and very close to town. Look no further; you have found it!
