“Pleasant and friendly”
Reviewed 3 June 2012

We have just returned from a lovely, relaxing holiday based at the Hotel Sonnschein. The hotel is cosy and friendly, with the owner (Gill) and staff just great (nothing too much trouble). The hotel was only let down by its food, which was 'up and down' - generally bland and uninteresting, without much 'home cooking' in evidence. The resort had some lovely walks and views, but lacked a real centre and atmosphere (which some may enjoy, if seeking peace and quiet).

Clean spacious hotel in a lovely quiet situation. Staff friendly and helpful. Sadly let down by poor quality of food. Ham cheese etc of the poorest processed quality. Chef doing his best but clearly not given the budget to provide 4 star quality food. Having said that you won't starve and there is plenty of choice but don't expect a gourmet experience! Also no tap water available at meals - large bottle €4.20.

We have visited this hotel two years running as part of a Christmas markets tour. For comfort, cleanlines and friendliness it must be rated 5 star. However, both times we found that the restaurant service at dinner was slow and badly co-ordinated. A wait of 40 minutes or more between courses is unacceptable. Had we been there on a purely bed and breakfast basis, we would have no hesitation in awarding the highest rating. The food (when we finally got it) was good and plentiful. We returned on the second occasion hoping that the poor service the first time was an aberration, only to be disappointed.

The Sonnschein is a clean, friendly and well run hotel. We booked a couple of weeks before departure and did not pay the full price so this may have a bearing on our views. We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful, always smiling and happy to serve. We knew beforehand that Austrian hotels are not allowed to provide tea and coffee in rooms so bought our own supply from the local supermarket and were more than happy just to have the facilities of fridge, kettle and cups. The food was more than adequate, we were served some really good meals and only had one that was a poor quality (but my husband's was fine). The only fault worth mentioning is that the breakfast self-service area is too small and congested. Having the ski-hire depot at the hotel was a bonus as we could hire all the equipment that evening, the ski-school meeting place and lockers were only a short walk away the following morning. Neiderau itself is a small quiet village but that is what we were looking for. We do not normally return to a resort but we would have no qualms in returning to the Sonnschein.........maybe in the summer on our motorbike.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Hotel. All I can say is we had a great time. We had a superior room in the new wing of the Hotel and it was huge, more like a mini suite. We had lovely views to the mountains and the slopes and as it was lovely and sunny, the balcony was a great bonus when returning from the days Skiing. We have stayed in many Ski hotels in Austria and Italy, and found this to be our most enjoyable to date. The food is fine, and you do have a choice of 3 main courses for your evening meal. OK it isnt top class Restaurant standard, but you certainly wont starve here. The breakfast consists of hot scrmbled eggs, bacon, or boiled eggs. There is also the usual meets and chese, and there is ususlly fresh fruits and Yoghurts as well as a choice of bread rolls and toast with various jams and Marmalade.
The hotel has 2 swimming pools with Steam and Sauna rooms available free of charge. These come in very handy after a hard day on the slopes. The Hotel is a few hundred yards from the centre and main slopes, but this isnt a problem as you can leave your Ski equipment at various Ski Depots right at the botom of the main Gondola.
Some people mentioned the price of drinks and said them to be a little expensive compared to elsewhere. I found the price of Alcoholic drinks to be ok, especially for a Hotel. However the Soft drinks do seem to be a bit on the high side, eg 4.20 euro for a 75 cl of water and 4.20 euro for 50 cl of coke or other soft drinkis. This can add up if you have children to consider.
Gill the owner and her staff are all very helpful and very friendly and will do their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
I can really say we had a lovely time at the Sonnschein, and look forward to the next time we can visit there. Thyanks again to all at the Hotel for a really lovely holiday.

Room Tip: Book a superior room and you will then be oin the new wing.
